A broad armistice mood prevails along the Russian front with no Austro Russian fighting for weeks. Soldiers meet unarmed in no man’s land while German Russian fraternizing alarms Russian commander General Gourka who fears German information gathering. The House approved a revised section requiring proof that published information has value to the enemy before penalties activate. The admin drafted a broad censorship provision but Congress adopted a more liberal clause placing authority with the president to prohibit publication by proclamation. The vote was 183 to 155 with substantial opposition to the administration text.
In Madison on May 4, the Brady wage bill for women and minors was killed 21 to 24 in the assembly with Socialist aid. Washington May 4. The state department warned German Socialists in the United States against attempting to force or influence a separate peace between Germany and Russia. Officials indicated acts could be prosecuted under American treason laws if proven, following charges by J G Phelps Stokes that some German-leaning wings of American Socialists sought such a peace.
Washington May 4 Senator Stone Missouri says cold storage managers ruin food at plants and in fields to raise prices. He urges government commandeering or supervision of plants, with a broad wartime embargo and drastic action against speculation.
Fond du Lac Wis May 4 Associated Press reports a new plan to create a canning factory this summer to preserve foodstuffs. Cookware for canning fruits and vegetables will be installed and may be used routinely by housewives during the canning season. Competent directors from domestic science classes and mothers' clubs will be ready to advise housewives.
San Francisco reports on the Mooney case with Oxman, chief witness, facing subornation charges. Oxman must answer in the superior court for attempted subornation after a grand jury failed to indict him. he is held following a preliminary hearing.
Green Bay Wisconsin May 4 Many times Judas J N Monahan of the municipal court has tried to retire at 10 o clock but habit keeps him in bed at 11. Daylight saving moved clocks ahead April 2 and he forgot he was shifted. He looked at his library clock that night and said just time to bed at 11 but could not resist a longer wake period. The next morning he admitted suggestion won where will power failed.
Otto M Reiss aged twenty six of this city died following an operation for appendicitis a week earlier. He was connected with the Rex Coal company and the Relax Steamship line and was known as a prominent young man in eastern Wisconsin.
Telegraph dispatches report the Chilean ambassador in Berlin demanded his misports an alleged error in Berlin. Berlin dispatches received indicate a dawn arrival today. Significant notes from London reference United Terms and a slight Warner tomorrow.
