Council members reviewed the sewer and drain budget showing a $4 965 90 deficit as the three and a half mile program proceeds. Officials expressed concern over the shortfall during Thursday’s meeting.
More than 460 persons attended the opening general assembly of the 18th annual Wisconsin Elementary School Principals Association conference at Oshkosh State College Health and Physical Education Building. Dr Dan T Dawson urged career principals with broad educational backgrounds to lead, administer, and manage school operations.
A speeding racing car crashed into the rear of a car driven by Patrolman Calvin Klaener. The officer gave the occupants a lecture and not a citation. The racers were two children under age ten driving a motorless soap box vehicle.
Appleton reports Senator Joseph R. McCarthy of Wisconsin died Thursday night and records now show he was 48, not 47 as previously listed. The correction comes after archival review of documents and biographical material.
The Common Council and Oshkosh town board set May 9 at 7 30 p m for a joint meeting in City Hall chambers to consider annexation of Rockaway Beach to Oshkosh and attach it to Oaklawn School district. Action includes installing a light at the South Side city parking lot and deciding district alignment.
Gov Vernon Thomson and Republican chairman Philip Kuehn delayed any action on filling Senator Joseph McCarthy’s seat until after his funeral. They planned to meet in Madison later to discuss a special election while Democratic chair Phillip Nash called a Sunday meeting. Six candidates from both parties were viewed as likely, led by Walter Kohler for Republicans and William Proxmire for Democrats.
Funeral services for Senator Joseph R. McCarthy set for 10 am Monday in the Senate chamber with a preceding Catholic Mass at St. Matthews Cathedral. His body will lie in state at Joseph Gawler’s Sons Inc. until the service is followed by burial in Appleton, Wisconsin.
Madison Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Robert Marotz and ten colleagues form a funeral delegation for the late Senator Joseph McCarthy. The group includes Fred H. Frank William Sullivan Henry M. Peters Richard E. Peterson Arnold J. Cane William R. Merriam Robert T. Huber Charles J. Schmidt David R. Mogilliz Ben A. Riehler. The time and place of the services are not yet announced but expected in Appleton next week.
Washington AP Beck surrendered to federal authorities after being indicted on income tax evasion charges linked to 1950 returns. Officials say his net income was $135,226 with a tax due of $71,960, $56,420 more than paid, and investigation cites $320,000 used from union funds for Beck’s benefit. He posted a $5,000 bond and faces further proceedings in Tacoma or Washington, D.C.
In Bonn the NATO Ministers Council secretly drafts a joint line on the Middle East and German reunification. The talks pledge unified deterrence including atomic and conventional forces, with Belgium’s Paul-Henri Spaak shaping the communique and a US message from President Eisenhower.
In Tallahassee Florida state Rep. Sam Gibbons received a telegram urging him to vote against a sales tax on automobiles, arguing cars are essential to the nation’s way of living. He suggests the message may reflect a slip by Western Union or a candid sender.
Appleton Wisconsin residents recount Joseph McCarthy as a bright energetic pupil from Underhill Grade School around 1915 to 1917. Former teacher Pat Heenan recalls him as a well behaved student and a local vote magnet for the district. Ed Aschenbrener recalls McCarthy as energetic and intelligent and notes his later political ambitions.
The House Appropriations Committee refused President Eisenhower’s request for 50 million dollars to fund a federal flood insurance program. It urged using 325000 from the Flood Indemnity Administration to craft a more workable plan, warning the 50 million would overcommit taxpayers and be costly to government and policyholders. The panel approved a 79840788 supplemental bill to fund various agencies through year-end. It also denied 800000 for a housing study but approved 800000 for a forest pest protection program in Idaho, Montana, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the Great Smoky Mountains.
