Holmes Bound Over In Attempted Double Shooting

Appleton Wisconsin May 2 preliminary examination of John J Holmes who last February attempted to kill his three atop gangs George Henry and Walter Walters was completed before Judge Bos bound him over to the fall term of circuit court with $600 bond. Unable to furnish bond Holmes remains in county jail. In circuit court yesterday William Strom of Florence pleaded guilty to a charge of assault with intent to kill and was sentenced by Judge Goodland to three years in state prison.

Robbers Try To Stop Express Near Eureka Springs

An attempt to hold up the St Louis and Sons Francisco express occurred near Eureka Springs Arkansas. Two men boarded the train at Selle tan under darkness and aimed revolvers at the engineer who refused to stop before the next siding. The robbers fled when the train neared Washburn as they panicked. two suspects have been arrested at Selis man.

Postponement Sought for Louisiana Purchase Exposition

Secretary Hey sent a letter to the Senate requesting the Louisiana Purchase Exposition be delayed from 1903 to 1904. A telegram from President Francis of the exposition company accompanied the request. Senator Cockrell read the letter in the Senate and proposed an amendment to the sundry civil appropriation bill to authorize the postponement.

Italian harpist Cassaletti fatally shoots self in danger of paralysis

Neenah Wisconsin May 2 Italian itinerant harpist Anton Cassaletti age unknown attempted suicide at his 525 Maple Street home. Worsening paralysis and fear of further disability cited as motives. He was shot in the skull and remains in doubtful condition. his two daughters aged fourteen and seventeen live with him. Local authorities take charge as the family has been city charges since October.

Murderer Leaps From Train After Escape in Ohio

Ftarry Cooper, a murderer who escaped from Marietta jail February 12, was recaptured at Beaumont two weeks ago and is again at large. While being taken by Sheriff Morrow toward Beaumont, Cooper asked to enter a closet near Little Rock, seized the sheriff, freed his handcuffs, and jumped from the window. The Beaumont authorities were paid the remaining 122 dollars of the reward, but county commissioners refuse reimbursement.

Trust Didn't Care Officials Testify Before Senate Panel

Washington May 2 Arthur Donner treasurer of the American Sugar Refining Company testified before the senate committee on Cuban relations regarding American holdings of Cuban sugar. He confirmed purchases totaling 92,000 tons since January 1 and said 45.40 tons remain in Cuba. He stated the company dealt only with brokers and made no advances to Cuban planters or banks. Henry C. Mott purchased raw sugar for the trust said about 50 percent of Cuban sugar was bought by the American company in a year and that a duty reduction would benefit Cuban sellers, not buyers. The hearing adjourned until Monday.
