U S marines fought North Vietnamese forces to seize Hill Forty Nine with heavy casualties on both sides. Four Marines were killed and 156 wounded, while 180 enemy troops were reported killed as air and artillery bombardment intensified around the demilitarized zone.
Cook County State's Atty John Siamos planned to introduce a bill in the Illinois legislature to outlaw advertising a book as obscene unless it is. A separate item notes a US Air Force Phantom downing a MIG during a dog fight near Hanoi. The report details multiple air raids, rail yard strikes, and extensive missions by Air Force, Navy and Marines around Ha Gia and Mai Phong with sustained anti aircraft fire and enemy interceptors. The Wisconsin Senate may repeal the 72 year old prohibition on colored oleo margarine this week. The Assembly approved a bill imposing a 1 cent per ounce tax for five years to fund a dairy research center at the University of Wisconsin. Senate leaders expect passage and tax repeal, with Democrats not opposing.
Marine Lance Corporal Larry J. Geiger 18 son of Mr and Mrs Henry J Geiger of Milwaukee was killed by enemy mortar fire Wednesday in Vietnam. His death joins other war casualties as the United States continues fighting in Southeast Asia.
A 14 year old runaway boy is held on suspicion of rape slayings of Deborah Crowther eight and Kimberly Crowther, with two other youths, Allan MacNally sixteen and Edward Robson fifteen, also questioned. Investigators say glue sniffing among youths preceded the crime. the suspect cannot be tried as an adult and faces delinquency proceedings.
Danny J. Valuskus, 49, was arraigned in Winnebago County Court Branch 3 on burglary charges after Oshkosh police arrested him at 1 54 a m Sunday. Officers found a broken window at Hoffmann Firestone and a missing TV sets, watches, radios, razors, rifles, and nearly $2 000 in cash. Court postponed to May 9 for counsel as bond set at $2 000.
Two killed in a heavy rain collision near Chippewa Falls raised Wisconsin’s toll to 246 for 1967. Dorothy Siverling 18 of Chippewa Falls and Robert Purviance 19 of Phoenix died when their car hit a farm truck on Highway 29 east of Chippewa Falls. Purviance and another man Novotny 18 were en route home from Eau Claire. The truck driver James McClain 47 and Purviance escaped injuries in an earlier crash. Additional fatalities included motorcyclist Eugene Neiworth 47 of Woodstock Illinois in Walworth County and two others Herbert Peterson 33 and Curtis Foreey 22 killed when their car struck a train in Marinette County.
In London, ammonia hurling bandits seized a truck with 140 gold bars valued at 2.1 million dollars. They beat and bound three men, dumped the bullion, and left the van in Islington. The workers were hospitalized with various injuries. the gold belonged to N M Rothschild and Sons, valued at about 750,000 pounds.
A severe blizzard battered the northern Plains for a second day with tornadoes and high winds. Fifteen to sixteen people were killed and more than 100 injured as a storm slammed Minnesota and surrounding states with up to two feet of snow and 77 mph winds. Blizzard warnings stretched from eastern Wyoming across the Dakotas to northwestern Minnesota, while a surge of arctic air cooled temperatures into the teens.
Green Bay residents learn their son Airman Third Class William Deuster Jr., 20, was killed in Udorn Thailand when an out of control truck crushed him against another vehicle. Deuster, a gate guard, died Thursday in the incident.
Pasadena researchers report Surveyor 3 gently nudged a one inch rock to test surface response for astronauts. The rock remained intact as the rover photographed it with color filters. 5,487 photos have been taken since landing 11 days ago, supporting the lunar surface could support human activity.
A band of about six tornadoes tore through southern Minnesota around dinner Sunday night. In Waseca and Albert Lea homes were leveled and millions in damage followed. Three teenage brothers and a Coast Guardsman were among the dead in separate incidents. searchers combed rubble and high waves hampered rescue efforts on Lake Superior.
