Red Arms Cache Found in Vietnam War Zone
Saigon officials announced a large cache of Viet Cong arms captured in mangrove swamps 60 miles south of the capital. The seizure included precision weapons and lightweight flame throwers possibly from Communist China, plus East German machine guns for anti aircraft use. In the three day operation 152 Viet Cong were killed, 35 captured, and 42 suspects rounded up. South Vietnamese casualties were three killed and eleven wounded. Air strikes and helicopter actions accounted for most of the Viet Cong deaths as civilians moved toward government areas amid May Day tensions. Combat police thwarted dissident union violence in Saigon as 1,000 Vietnamese Christian Confederation of Labor members gathered for May Day speeches.
