Pittsburg and surrounding districts faced a general labor revolt as streetcar and interurban lines shut down, forcing almost a million residents to walk or ride. Mayor Armstrong pressed for settlement while unions and companies negotiated amid broader coal, railroad, and port strikes.
Youngstown Ohio May 1 Nearly 2 060 machinists employed in city plants report for work today. Meetings Sunday and last night may boost the number of workers before the day ends. Painters Demand Wage Increase In Minneapolis nearly 300 onion painters struck after wage bids from fifty to sixty cents an hour were refused. Employers say vacancies filled by non union men.
Heavy dealings in International Mercantile Marine shares dominated today’s market. Combined sales of common and preferred hit 135,000, with the preferred at 98 and a 7% gain over last week, while the common rose to 29.5 and gained 3.5 points.
The city commission announced notable changes to the roster of appointees. Former Mayor Voss is named City Assessor. Ms Eaton named Corporation Counsel. Miss Brayton placed head of the Municipal Department of Poor. The commission council meeting details are in this issue.
In Tsinanfu on May 1, faculty at Shantung Christian University celebrate a Rockefeller foundation grant via the China medical board. The gift totals 150000 dollars over five years for buildings, equipment, and faculty and student expenses, plus 60000 for two new wings and dormitories. Sixty students will study at Tsinanfu from Peking’s Triuan Medical College, under foundation direction, to prepare for medical education.

Washington May 1 reports say a regular army of 180000 at peace strength has been agreed upon by Senate and House conferees for the army bill. The plan envisions expansion to about 750000 in war time, while peace strength is set near 250000 in the senate version. The accord is tentative pending other disputed bill features.
Hope of finding Rudolph Wailing, missing twenty three days, was abandoned after fifty prominent Beloit citizens including Mayor W H Adams two aldermen and Sheriff Del Chamberlain returned from a west Beloit search. Air wells pools streams and abandoned buildings were checked. The case stands until May 3 when RR Fowler charged with the murder will be called in court.
Chicago May 1 a circuit court decision upholding that Francis Bacon wrote the plays attributed to William Shakespeare will be vacated following a judges meeting. The suit by Sam N Relic was argued by Fudge ard Tothill and others who circulated against the Bacon claim amid heated debate.

Associated Press reports the insular government plans a 10 million dollar Philippine National Bank. Board members include Harvey P. Williz, Samuel Ferguson, William H. Anderson, Leon Roththal, Venancio Contemporon, Teodoro Yanzcco, and Vicente Singson Enecnamen. Government holds 107,000 of 200,000 shares with funding from treasury, agricultural bank merger, and other sources. Plans aim to serve agricultural interests and open by August 1, with possible earlier operation.
Inez secretary of Captain Franz von Panen did not appear in United States district court on the plot to dam the Welland Canal. The hearing was postponed to next Monday at the government’s request amid papers seized during arrests and related protests by the State Department.
