Communist Sappers struck a U.S. artillery base 39 miles southwest of Da Nang, killing 33 Americans and wounding 76 in the heaviest one day toll since February 1969. Parole Hoffa scheme revealed by Justice Dept
The Justice Department disclosed a supposed plan to extract up to 1 million from imprisoned Teamsters chief Jimmy Hoffa. A Midwest man close to Sen. John L. McClellan allegedly would press the Arkansas Democrat to intercede with the parole board. McClellan denies any contact and opposes Hoffa’s release. The FBI learned of the scheme from an inside source at Lewisburg prison, where Hoffa serves an eight year sentence. No arrests were planned as no law was believed broken.
