Heavy American casualties from Da Nang base attack

Communist Sappers struck a U.S. artillery base 39 miles southwest of Da Nang, killing 33 Americans and wounding 76 in the heaviest one day toll since February 1969. The assault, aided by fog and mortars, triggered Americal Division reinforcements and an official inquiry into how the base was breached.

Big-Time Shell Game Dumping of Penn Central Stock

Washington (UPI) buyers of Penn Central stock before its bankruptcy were said to be victims of a shell game by banks and investment firms aware of inside information. Rep. Patman led a House Banking Committee report naming Chase Manhattan Bank Allegheny Corp Investors Mutual and IDS among those selling 1.8 million Penn Central shares April to June 1970. Several firms including Morgan Guarantee Trust Illinois National Bank Provident National Bank Security Pacific and U S Trust are listed as large sellers.

Congressman Calls for Coed Jails

Washington AP report on Rep. Abner J. Mikva proposing coed prisons to reduce male prisoner complaints and homosexual trends. All Pintos Recalled By Ford

Ford Motor Co. recalls 204000 1971 Pintos for modification to prevent ignition of vapors in the air cleaner. Ford notes a few cars burned in engine compartments but flames did not reach the passenger area. Evaporation system stores gases in a canister and feeds them to the carburetor when starting.

Public Views New Jacob Shapiro School

About 2,500 to 3,000 people attended Oshkosh’s open house for the new Jacob Shapiro Elementary School at 1050 Wigth Ave. A dedication at 3 pm honored Dr. Jacob Shapiro, environmental expert and UW Oshkosh professor, who died in 1970. Jeff Kubsch, first grader, proposed the name.

Wisconsin urged to boost private industry growth

Gov. Lucey’s adviser John Udell called for reducing government expenses and promoting private manufacturing growth in Wisconsin. Parole Hoffa scheme revealed by Justice Dept

The Justice Department disclosed a supposed plan to extract up to 1 million from imprisoned Teamsters chief Jimmy Hoffa. A Midwest man close to Sen. John L. McClellan allegedly would press the Arkansas Democrat to intercede with the parole board. McClellan denies any contact and opposes Hoffa’s release. The FBI learned of the scheme from an inside source at Lewisburg prison, where Hoffa serves an eight year sentence. No arrests were planned as no law was believed broken.
