A catastrophic blaze struck New York state's capitol in Albany, damaging the west wing and destroying priceless records and library holdings. The fire started in the assembly library, with estimates reaching ten million dollars in damage and several sections of the building left in ruins.

Madison March 29. Civil Service Commissioner C E Buell has secured an alternative writ of mandamus from the Wisconsin Supreme Court to compel Secretary Frear to show cause why he should not audit the Civil Service Commission accounts. The writ is returnable April 7 when the constitutionality of the law will be argued. The action has the approval of Secretary Frear and of the civil service commissioner to clarify the situation.
The customs service uncovered a wholesale fur smuggling system from Canada with Montreal dealers selling to Americans who pay in advance and receive duty free goods. Houlton Maine served as a base and Chief Wilkie announced seizures and a wide investigation to recover smuggled furs.

Mrs J W Allen of Nashville Tenn testified about how Richard G Stack took his son John Stack III while his wife M Burbank was on a second honeymoon. Mrs Catherine Waugh Mc Culough, Miss Harriet Grim and other suffragette leaders watched with signs of displeasure as Conzing spoke, delivering the first female argument against woman suffrage in the session.

The steamship Branksome Hall reports the four masted bark Butte-Hire laden with nitrate roaming with sails set and crewless in the Bay of Biscay. Branksome Hall closed in Monday and found her deserted with a lifeboat missing as a gale thwarted rescue efforts.
