City observances close many offices and businesses on Good Friday with hours limited or shut. Thousands attend union and church services while stores, taverns, banks, and libraries adjust hours or close. a joint service at First Congregational Church and separate ministers’ gathering at Plymouth Congregational Church are planned.
Wisconsin proposes a 1965 67 program to add two boys schools a new girls school an adult treatment center and a correctional reception facility. It also calls for a new colony and training school for the mentally retarded and a Winnebago State Hospital administration building.
In Dallas a thief drained fuel from Douglas Lee Hoke’s car and spilled gasoline on the driveway. The burglar burned the spill and smeared soot on Hoke’s station wagon with the message Thanks for the gas.
Dahlke, a 27 year old Oshkosh native and Army dental technician, will be tried June 15 in Reno for the murder of his wife Gioria dean. He pleaded innocent at arraignment before Judge John Gabrielli and remains jailed without bond. The case centers on a fatal October 12 dispute in Dahlke’s car that ended with multiple gunshots and the burial of Gioria in Oshkosh.
SLEEPER VAN NUYS Calif UPD reports motorist Anthony B Calderon 49 of Pacoima Calif said he became dizzy while driving home pulled over and fell asleep. He woke to find a thief had taken a 65 watch a 6 lighter wallet with 7 50 and four credit cards from his left pants pocket
The Senate voted to take up for formal consideration the House passed civil rights bill after a deadlock. Democratic Leader Mansfield led the motion which cleared the way for hearings by the Judiciary Committee headed by Eastland. Senate debate was expected to begin after a three day Easter recess. Proxmire joined the majority while Nelson was not listed as voting.
An explosion ripped the American tanker San Jacinto off the Virginia coast early today. One crew member died, and the 39 member crew fought to stay aboard the bobbing stern as the ship split in two in 3 to 10 foot seas. Harold J. Titus, 40, of Pine City New York remained aboard the stern with 36 survivors. Two crew members transferred to the Mobile Pegasus to carry safety papers. a steward M Dotilla died apparently of natural causes. Coast Guard reported the Mobile Pegasus released and heading away. The sinking occurred at about 12 45 am forty miles off the coast while the San Jacinto en route from Portland Maine to Houston Texas. The Trinidad Corp of New York owned the vessel. Sun Shipbuilding Co built it. a new bow was added by Todd Shipbuilding Co in 1953. Two tugs left Norfolk to tow the sections.
Berlin officials said they doubted the two American airmen shot down over East Germany would be freed by Easter after fruitless U S Soviet inquiries. The men Capt David I Holland 35 of Holland Minnesota and Capt Melvin J Kessler 30 of Philadelphia were reportedly to be released soon per Soviet envoy Dobrynin but no concrete steps or dates were given.
Chicago authorities hunt a supermarket bandit after a daytime robbery at a National Tea Co. store netted about $10,000. Three accomplices were killed in a gunfight. the suspect, Chris Panteas alias Michael Palasti, may have been wounded and fled.
Army doctors at Walter Reed reported signs of moderate pneumonitis at the base of General Douglas MacArthur’s right wing and started antibiotics. Brig. Gen. Henry S. Murphey declared him critically ill Wednesday night but said he was improving from Monday’s extreme condition. The 84 year old general had gallbladder surgery on March 6, followed by a severe decline.
Oshkosh woke to eight inches of snow the heaviest since 1960 with drifting complicating plowing. Winnebago County crews began midnight work, about 30 plows mobile, and city crews deployed 18 machines to clear roads and intersections by morning. Church snow removal requests loom as Easter services approach.
Coast Guard resumes search for a possible fifth victim after a 65 foot drift fishing boat Two Georges capsized off Boynton Inlet. Of 20 aboard, Jerry Sapp is unaccounted for while four others were confirmed dead and three survivors hospitalized. The skipper Captain James Stevens and crewmen Don Lashchuk and Jim Scarborough describe the capsizing as a succession of giant waves that rolled the boat.
In Dallas within 16 days Jack Ruby will seek a new trial. His new lawyer Dr Hubert Winston Smith will push for medical tests including truth serum and hypnosis. Smith heads the Law Science Academy of the University of Texas and will enlist top medical and legal experts for the appeal in the Kennedy assassination case.
A Rock County boy named James Murray, age year old, was struck by a car on Highway 51 near Belat and died, pushing Wisconsin’s 1964 traffic deaths to 203, up from 137 this date last year. Ruth Ann Boevers, 20, of Milwaukee, died in a one car crash near Lebanon Kentucky while traveling home for Easter vacation, after a car overturning following a skid.
