Two Fond du Lac County residents were killed when their car collided with a loaded livestock truck near Waupun on highways 151 and 26. Cumberland High School teacher Mathew Lofy Sr. was seriously injured in a separate Tomah crash and later died, with his kidney failure and leg amputation noted. Snowy roads and a speeding crowd headed to Madison for the state tournament are described.
Two U S Air Force planes collided in flight near Clark Air Base north of Manila, killing seven crewmen. The twin-engine C47 and the T39 crashed and burned in an uninhabited area about a mile east of the base runway. There were no survivors among the five officers and two enlisted men aboard. Names withheld until families were notified. The Air Force opened an investigation.
North Central Airlines asks the Oral Aeronautics Board to remove service from Outagamie County to Appleton’s Winnebago County Airport as of April 25. Outagamie County plans to shut its airport on April 24, leaving Appleton without current service and prompting potential opposition or alternative routes.
Wisconsin residents aged 65 and older are not claiming property tax relief. Only 29 percent of about 114000 eligible seniors have filed with the State Tax Department, averaging $6 per claim. Losses could reach $90000 if trends persist, says Commission on Aging director James McMichael. Eligible households earn $3000 or less annually.
Northwestern staff writer James I Metz reports state aeronautics director T K Jordan warned at the State Aeronautical Conference that federal aid for airports will favor air carrier hubs while general aviation facilities face reduced support. With FAA priorities emphasizing commercial traffic, the 1967 budget cuts and policy shifts could curb aid for general aviation ports. MADISON AP Legislators from both parties will push four year universities in the Fox River Valley and Racine Kenosha area despite Gov Knowles urging restraint. Republican senators Gerald Lorge and Robert Warren endorse funding for initial phases of new universities in their regions and in Racine Kenosha as Knowles proposed.
Senator Robert F. Kennedy scaled Mt Kennedy in the Yukon to plant a flag in memory of John F. Kennedy. The New York Democrat, a novice climber, reached the 13,900 foot summit after a day and a half of ascent and was to be flown from base camp to Whitehorse by a Royal Canadian Air Force plane.
More than 15 000 protesters led by Dr Martin Luther King Jr began an unprecedented march toward Alabama's capital in an army guarded display. Bunche joined King as sheriffs deputies served a boycott lawsuit in Selma. The capital resembled a military zone with guards, helicopters and troops surrounding the route to the Capitol.
Jose Rivera ran out of gas and coasted to a stop in a single engine airplane near U S Highway 62 in Port El Paso Texas. The incident occurred Wednesday and left Rivera stranded temporarily until help arrived.
CAPE KENNEDY Fla AP The two man crew of the world s first maneuverable spaceship Moll Brown returned to the embarkation point of their history making mission aboard the recovery ship and touched down at 82 am. The astronauts Chissey and John W Yeuwne were greeted by the Air Force band and a Broadway overture. Grissom and Leung wore blue NASA jackets. Families waited at the gate as scientists and press prepared for post flight exams. The mission ends with extensive physicals and continued coverage on Page Col 6
President Johnson asks Congress to approve a plan to reorganize the 175 year old Customs Bureau and end patronage jobs. The reform would create stronger regional and district supervision and cut salaries by tightening management of inspectors and appraisers to produce a net annual saving of about 8 million dollars within a few years.
Peking declared readiness to send troops to fight US forces in South Vietnam if asked by the Viet Cong, and to provide all necessary war materiel. Western analysts warn the word ready implies no definite commitment, predicting China would act only if the US expands ground action.
West German officials extended the hunt for Nazi murderers until January first. Four members abstained in the vote. The decision followed the cabinet meeting chaired by Chancellor Adenauer and led by the Christian Democrats with the Free Democrats and other parties positioned in support.
