South Viet withdrawal from Laos completes drive
South Viet Nam pulled out the last of its army and armor from Laos leaving a small marine rearguard as U S forces began withdrawing from Khe Sanh amid advancing Communist tanks and troops. U S air strikes hit four North Vietnamese tanks and damaged two as fighting continued near Luang Prabang. The Saigon and Pentagon hailed the operation as a victory disrupting the Ho Chi Minh Trail, claiming 176000 tons of enemy munitions destroyed and 13000 enemy soldiers killed in a 10 to 1 advantage, though the Pentagon later said the drive was cut short by superior Communist troops.
