Washington reports that President Roosevelt must sign a measure granting nonmember banks borrowing rights from federal reserve banks during the banking emergency. Congress acted to empower Roosevelt as recess begins, with conditions on security, soundness, reserves, and examinations mirroring member banks.
Charles E Mitchell former chairman of the National City Bank was indicted by a federal grand jury on willful income tax evasion for 1929. The charge notes a 1929 net income of 2 823 405 95 against a reported net loss of 48 000 and zero tax paid.
Mysterious death of George Pable a 6d year old at the Oshkosh plant led to autopsy and an inquest. Raymond W. Stevens 59 died after a self inflected gunshot wound in his Highland Park mansion as his aged father lay near death from a stroke. The Stevens family once controlled Ahnoiws Life Insurance and the La Salle and Stevens hotels before receiverships and indictments for embezzlement tied to the failed Ih aos Life Insurance company. Police recount a son found the elder Stevens unconscious after a shot rang out while family members hurried back to the room. The elder man reportedly battled gloom over the charges as the downfall of a Chicago business dynasty unfolded now ending in tragedy.
Mrs Nicholas Roosevelt aged 81 died at her daughter’s home at 62 East Eighty sixth Street New York. She was born in New York in 1852 and was wife of Nicholas Latrobe Roosevelt father of Henry Latrobe Roosevelt assistant secretary of the Navy. Her husband died 42 years ago. She left behind daughter Mrs Hoff and son Nicholas De Roosevelt.
Madison dies in a report on the finance committee proposal to raise revenue for the next biennium.
