Wisconsin assembly approves engrossment of the primary election bill after an all night struggle. A 69 to 42 vote raises the call amid disorder, with Lturdevant and Price aiding the session. Final roll call lists numerous members, and similar forecasts predict passage.
Madison March 20 The assembly opened an all night session to debate a substitute for the primary election bill. A 53 to 39 vote approved the substitute while efforts to call the house failed. Absentees were hunted down and late arrivals restored votes enabling a 51 vote call, ending in adjournment at 4 45 a m. Sturdevant's late return tipped the balance for engrossment. Oshkosh attendance and tax hearing noted separately.
Madison March 20 evening sessions began with a night meeting on the primary election bill. Lawmakers in both houses moved bills in regular order and set regulation affairs as a daily aim. Assemblyman Sarau was delayed at home and returned Tuesday morning. E P Allis Milwaukee cited graduates as valuable hires while Reuben Thwaites urged a 10 000 annual fund for the state historical library.
Phillip Ross of 170 South Main street, captain of No 6 base, suffered facial injuries in a Tuesday night scuffle with George Schomer of 394 Thirteenth street. Schomer admits striking Ross, while Peter Schomer allegedly joined the fray. Police and fire officials expect arrests and a hearing. Ross remained home recovering.
The Candlelight club will listen to Prof Marek of Ripon Callene on April 9. Officers elected for the ensuing month include President Charles H Forward and Vice President J M Burn. The next bi weekly meeting shifted to April 4 after election night on April 2.
Professor Marsh of Ripon College will deliver a lecture on the plant and animal life of Lake Winnebago. The talk promises novelty and interest, drawn from Marsh’s studies of lakes near Oshkosh after cruising the lake last summer. Attendees at Tuesday's meeting included J. Howard Jenkins, Prof. Henry Dehde, W. P. White, Prof. H. A. Simonds, T. Daly, F. C. Stewart, G. E. Williams, E. Richmond, T. R. Morgan, Dr. S. B. Ackley, Dr. J. G. O. Noyes, J. M. Hurn, W. G. Cook, Dr. Burton Clark, D. H. Cameron, Wiliam J. Campbell, John Harrington, Ber Daly.
The will of General Harrison filed for probate estimates a $400,000 estate with principal securities and real estate. It earmarks $125,090 to Union Trust for the wife during life, a further $15 to the wife, $310,000 to daughter Elizabeth, and significant legacies to grandchildren and several charities. If a new child is born, $20,000 is set aside. a son would bear the Harrison name and receive the sword and sash. Remaining estate divided among surviving children with specified shares and life-time provisions for the wife and Mrs. Harrison’s six months pre marriage articles preserved. The will notes earlier jewelry gifts to Russell and Mary and confirms various household provisions for the wife. The codicil increases the wife’s shown share from $190,000 to $725,000.
Milwaukee dispatch reports a second rain sleet storm this season crippling electric wires across Milwaukee Menomonee Valley flood worsens driving residents to higher ground. Wires down between Milwaukee and Chicago leave railways struggling. trolleys and telegraph lines suffer as storms sweep north to Oshkosh Fond du Lac. Campbellsport endures worst damage with entire lines dead.
Delays and outages spread from Portage to Fountain City as sleet and heavy snow cripple communication and rail lines. In St Paul the season’s snow burdened streets and transit, with Duluth reporting the worst of the storm and a fire incident near Leater Park narrowly avoided tragedy. Root River ice break travels to the lake with light floods and no bridge jams at Racine.
The Oshkosh Consumers League meeting postponed to next week due to stormy weather. New York Consumers League rules define a fair house with equal pay for equal work, weekly wages, employer fund from fines, 8am to 5pm with lunch, one half-holiday monthly in summer, at least one paid summer vacation week, overtime pay, observance of legal holidays, sanitary compliance, humane treatment, loyalty and tenure valued, and prohibition of hiring anyone under fourteen.
Mrs. W. Be Thrall of Omra won the deracy heifer calf offered by G. A. Buck staff for the best five pound roll of butter. Mrs. Thrall also won a dress pattern altered by F. A. Plummer for the best five pound jar of butter. Mrs. Tarvey Rice of Algoma received a boy's suit of clothes from L. Struching & Co. for the best five pound jar of seqxirator but ter. After noon tap contest among farmers who had worked on exhibition was on, Superintendent Mekterrow judged.
Professor Franklin Giddings and Miss Mary Roberts Smith compare marriage ages among college and non college women. They find factory work and higher education delay marriage. College women average twenty six, non college twenty four. They view postponement as beneficial for maturity and readiness for motherhood. Philadelphia Times
