U S and mission workers are pulled from Medan as government troops retake the North Sumatran city from rebels. About 250 Americans and 825 Dutch nationals depart on the Oranje to Singapore amid shifting control and new rebel threats.
Washington reports the Senate considers a measure to authorize selling 312 billion dollars of government surplus farm commodities abroad. Sen. Ellender says passage is likely with bipartisan backing, despite Agriculture Department opposition to a provision boosting annual disposal to 500 million dollars.
Rep Moss says the special subcommittee should suspend hearings and widen investigation to determine facts on influence claims regarding the FCC. He questions staff work before witness interviews as Col Moore and Downey Rice testified amid a Miami Channel 10 award dispute.
The Common Council will detail a 1 100 000 general obligation bond issue for storm sewers and vote on repealing a health certification ordinance for tavern and restaurant food handlers. The plan seeks to prevent hunger and homelessness after UC payments end, with weekly benefits near the current state average of about 30 dollars despite varied state limits. Governors invited include Stratton Illinois Davis North Dakota Faubus Arkansas Hodges North Carolina Johnson Vermont Knight California.
New Delhi and Moscow to connect by air within six weeks under a Indian Soviet accord. Air India International and Aeroflot to run weekly flights. Discussion includes federal payroll tax financing for unemployment and veteran benefits and possible changes to extend aid to more workers.
Police report shells ripped roofs and struck homes in Sheboygan Falls and nearby Kostburg area around 7 PM. Unexploded projectiles were found at three houses while residents were warned to watch for remaining ordnance. The retrial of James R. Hoffa and two co defendants on wiretap conspiracy charges was adjourned by Judge John M. Cash to April 3. Hoffa, Owen Brennan of Detroit and Bernard Spinjel, a wiretap expert, faced a hung jury after a December trial. The case concerns conspiring to tap Teamster Headquarters in Detroit. U.S. Attorney Paul W. Williams indicated the prosecution would complete its narcotics conspiracy case.
