Defense Secretary Melvin Laird publicly indicated a U.S. troop reduction goal below 30,000 by late 1972, saying he can deliver. Officials cited progress turning over ground combat, air force advances, and reduced enemy activity, with Laos and Cambodia aiding disengagement.
Six Army officers begin deliberations on Lt William Calley Jr charged with the My Lai massacre. The panel, sequestered and limited to 8:30 am to 5 pm, weighs counts of premeditated murder, murder, voluntary manslaughter, or acquittal. Calley, 24, led Charlie Company on the My Lai mission in 1968.
Thomas E. Dewey, famed crime-busting attorney and three time New York governor, died Tuesday of a heart attack in Miami Beach. His body was flown to New York for funeral services. Dewey, a two time Republican presidential candidate, had planned a White House dinner and St Patrick’s Day event before his death. President Nixon held a moment of silence at the dinner in his honor. Autopsy results pending but coronary artery disease noted. Dewey’s last day included golf with Duane Andreas at the Seaview Hotel. He remains best known for the 1948 upset victory bid over Harry Truman.
Secretary of State Rogers said Congress would likely back U N police force participation to secure a peace settlement between Egypt and Israel. He cited the need for a multinational force including U S troops at Sharm el Sheik and warned failure could risk world peace.
More than 1,000 South Vietnamese troops fled Laotian jungle while pursued by North Vietnamese forces. They scrambled onto rescue helicopters after scaling a 1,000 foot escarpment and contended with shelling near Brown and Lolo bases. Two helicopters were shot down during resupply. Casualties reported as light with damage to Khe Sanh area.
President Nixon announced the engagement of his daughter Tricia to Edward Cox during a White House party. The June 5 wedding was revealed amid a pre St Patrick’s Day celebration that doubled as Tricia’s 25th birthday and a social event attended by about 300 guests including Ireland’s prime minister.
The forecast reports cloudy to partly cloudy skies with a slight rise in temperature. Overnight lows near 20 degrees, with details referenced on page 10.
