Dr Martin Luther King Jr said police brutality spurred a march on Montgomery's courthouse to protest a violent clash between sheriff's deputies on horseback and civil rights demonstrators. Eight people were hospitalized from the Tuesday melee amid calls for peaceful, orderly protest.
Christopher Lynch, sought in the subway slaying of Brooklyn youth Andrew Mormile, turned himself in at a Harlem station with his brother Roger. Police identify the victim as 17 year old Mormile, a Brooklyn High School senior, stabbed after a dispute over cigarettes aboard a subway car. The driverless, crowded car contained about ten witnesses who fled. an anonymous tip led detectives to Lynch with details from Terry Toomer, 18, who accompanied Lynch and reported the attack.
Civil rights leaders plan a Selma to Montgomery march to highlight voting rights. Negro attorneys with Justice Department support seek court protection against state trooper interference, with a five day hearing concluding as Judge Frank M. Johnson Jr. promised a prompt ruling.
Washington AP The White House said the voting rights bill will go to Congress this afternoon with Atty. Gen. Katzenbach transmitting it rather than the President. He will testify tomorrow. Senators expect token filibuster or limited debate. hopes for no full battle.Turn to page 8 column 6.
The House passed a measure to set federal standards for congressional districts aiming for compact shapes and population within 14 percent of the state average. Backers say it could curb oddly drawn districts and equalize votes. the bill now heads to the Senate for quick consideration. The changes would take effect ahead of the 1966 elections amid renewed pressure after the Supreme Court ruling on voting equality.
A 79-year-old woman Alice Herz set herself on fire on a Detroit street to protest U S involvement in South Vietnam. Passers by extinguished the flames. she was in critical condition. A note in her purse described Buddhist self sacrifice and opposition to President Lyndon B Johnson's policy.
A severe winter storm battered Oshkosh and the Winnebagoland region with blowing snow causing traffic hazards. Flights from Chicago were canceled including the 12:43 p.m. departure and two other morning flights. the Wausau flight due at 9:20 a.m. was also not reported. Public-school buses began returning pupils home after 1 p.m. due to ongoing bad weather conditions. Continued on Page 8.
C. C. Casey had planned a small celebration after paying off the mortgage on his bakery in Plainview Texas. The fire department arrived early to extinguish a blaze that struck the shop just before its scheduled opening.
US jet fighters bombed Communist areas in Laos dropping over 20 tons of high explosives. More than a dozen planes including six F105 fighter-bombers launched from Da Nang on a secret mission, returning with empty racks. Accompanying F100s provided air cover as pilots refrained from official comment. Two more American deaths were reported in South Vietnam, a Navy officer in the Mekong delta and a Marine from an accidental Da Nang shooting. Continued on Page 8.
A late winter storm swept Wisconsin causing heavy drifting and snow packed roads. Highways were hazardous with accidents and off schedule buses. Milwaukee airport atop five inches of snow by 8 am while Madison and Beloit reported three inches. Weather blizzard continued across southern half of state.
Madison AP A bill to lower the voting age from 21 to 18 again faces a vote after a 49 45 motion to reconsider the prior 51 41 passage. Thirteen lawmakers from both parties sponsored the measure which would also put a referendum on the November 1966 ballot. Also in Madison Senator Dorman sworn in as 33rd Democrat. Senate now 13 Democrats 20 Republicans. The Senate amended rules to grant the Finance Committee independent status amid party line votes.
Three Wisconsin college buses carrying students were redirected from Montgomery to Washington after civil rights leaders advised against the Montgomery stop. The trip, organized by SNCC volunteers, included UW Madison and several state schools with a fourth bus canceled. The situation followed concerns about violence in Montgomery and potential Senate action on voting rights.
