Oshkosh council stalls over sewer rate plans stalemate

The Oshkosh Common Council deadlocked 3-3 on two sewer rate ordinances amid an absent member. Debate split between flat 48.8 cent per 100 cu ft and 7.44 dollar quarterly fixed charge plus 23.3 cent per 100 cu ft. Mayor Marken and others urged prompt action to avoid higher utility costs. Industrial leaders warned of shutdowns or halted expansions if rates rise, with some noting Fond du Lac charges cheaper for certain meters. Continued on page 2.

Withdrawal halted for POW release details in Vietnam

UPI reports the United States again halted troop withdrawals from South Vietnam awaiting the names dates and places of release of the last American POWs held by the Communists. About 700 U.S. servicemen boarded jets as 32 prisoners were released in Hanoi while 140 military and seven civilians remained in Communist hands.

Gasoline drain sparks garage blast injuring man

Oshkosh Fire Chief Russell Rothenbach warned about using flammable liquids inside closed spaces after a Thursday evening blast in a heated garage. Robert L. Eckstein, 1217 Harney Ave., sustained burns on his hands while draining gasoline from a tank. the vehicle and most contents were destroyed. Four Oshkosh fire units contained the fire in about 30 minutes. Eckstein reported a spark from a dropped wrench caused the explosion. officials noted gasoline vapors likely ignited by a wood stove, though Eckstein disputed that. Firefighters saved a rear lean-to with several boats, two snowmobiles, and a motorcycle intact. Chief Rothenbach urged ventilation and not draining gasoline in basements. The Napa 1949 utility vehicle was among the destroyed items.

Earliest Lake Winnebago ice-out on record

West wind broke up the main ice of Lake Winnebago by mid morning Thursday, marking the earliest ice-out since records began in 1909. Marty Wesenberg and his son Steve run Jerry's Tavern as Otter Street Fishing Club HQ, preserving decades of ice-out dates started by Henry Misfeldt and continued by locals including the late Fred Geiger.

Escapee captured after day and a half of freedom

Ronald Schwensow, 33, was apprehended by a Milwaukee officer after a lengthy escape. He allegedly carried a .22 pistol used to threaten Outagamie deputies and a Larsen couple who drove him to Milwaukee.
