The House approved a package raising Social Security benefits for about 26 million Americans by 10 percent retroactive to Jan 1 with first checks in June. The measure also raises the debt ceiling to 430 billion dollars to ensure timely government payments.
Lt. Col. Anthony B. Herbert, a highly decorated officer, charged Maj. Gen. John Barnes and Col. Ross Franklin with concealing mistreatment of prisoners in Vietnam and related abuses. He cited four witnessed incidents including water torture and electric shock, saying some generals see themselves as God and that he must speak out despite near retirement.
At Fort Benning the government urged a six officer jury to convict Lt. William L. Calley Jr. of premeditated murder for the My Lai massacre. Prosecutor Aubrey Daniels argued the victims were unarmed civilians and that Calley acted on his own initiative. Defense contends orders and combat stress excuse the acts. deliberations follow closing summaries and jury instructions.
Edward A Mitchell of Evansville Indiana punched Hale Boggs in a Washington hotel men’s room after a Gridiron Club dinner. Mitchell, a former congressman, said boggs mocked Nixon and Mitchell’s spouse described him as rugged and strong. Cronkite noted possible legal action.
President Nixon labeled south Florida a disaster area after migrant farm workers pleaded for aid at his Key Biscayne retreat. An initial 2.5 million funded relief for about 15 000 workers in the Miami area and near Lake Okeechobee, with state officials pressing for help.
Rep John W Byrnes Wisconsin GOP Ways and Means panelist outlines a plan enabling taxpayers to credit 20 percent of state and local income taxes against federal liability and to deduct state income tax payments. CHICAGO AP The Cos mopoltan National Bank disclosed a loss over six million dollars with FBI questioning a longtime customer and a 24-year bookkeeper about possible embezzlement. The bank says funds were moved via checks up to 900000 on a corporate account over at least a week. The loss is reported between six and seven million. bank remains solvent with bond coverage and reserves. Audit and OCC investigators are examining the case.
