Couple slain by gunman? No. Man abducts couple in Milwaukee drive
A rural Wisconsin couple returned to work after a three hour ordeal in which they were forced at gunpoint to drive to Fond du Lac and later Milwaukee by Ronald Schwenson, a 33 year old from Milwaukee, who remains at large. The pair, Donald Wojahn and Gail Wojahn, were eating lunch when seized. Schwenson escaped in Oshkosh and later targeted Milwaukee streets before the couple were released on Lake Shore Drive. The incident followed his capture attempt by Outagamie deputies at the Calumet County jail and a statewide alert was issued for a gold 1961 car. Schwenson claimed to seek “free time to think” and to hide out in Milwaukee as he directed the couple through a series of stops. He is considered armed and dangerous.

Blizzard cools confrontation at Wounded Knee siege
A near blizzard eased the stand off at Wounded Knee where about 200 Oglala Sioux Indians and federal forces faced off. federal agents relaxed a blockade of 300 marshals and Indian police around the village as AIM leaders refused to surrender. Dennis Banks said supplies were dwindling and fuel low while insulin and meals entered slowly. Officials planned another meeting as Morton visited to assess the charges against tribal officials.

Fremont Fights Wolf River Floods As Town Evacuates
Fremont residents, aided by housewives in blue jeans and hip boots, staffed sandbags at the Village Hall to hold back rising Wolf River. The flood, driven by rain and melting snow, sent water into basements and forced 25 to 30 families from their homes along the riverfront. At New London, the river stood at 11.1 feet with a three day hold forecast, while Fremont reported water well over 12 feet, the highest since 1922. An all night vigil by the bridge area tracked rising water and a highway bridge crossing, with plans for a new bridge by 1974-75 due to its poor condition. Strong currents carved new channels in bayous and a large bog chunk broke loose, halting traffic at the bridge as crews continued to battle the flood.

Oshkosh man dies after hostage stand at Picasso Plaza
An Oshkosh man, aged in his 20s, held two hostages at gunpoint in a sixth floor hotel room at Picasso Plaza on Main Street for about two hours before shooting himself with a 357 magnum. The hostages, Charles Blackburn and Tom Woodland, were in the room. Woodland was released. Police say the gun had been stolen and the incident ended with the man’s death nearby.
