North Vietnamese regulars overran the isolated Ashau Special Forces camp after a two day battle. About 15 to 20 U S advisers and 30 Montagnards defended the fort in forested hills near Laos. Three U S aircraft were lost as the camp was pounded into ruins.

In Da Nang South Viet Nam the Special Forces camp at Ashau was lost to the Viet Cong after nearly 48 hours of heavy combat. Lt Col Kenneth B Lacey said Ashau closed at 5 45 pm and a number of defenders were evacuated by helicopter before the camp was abandoned to a reinforced North Vietnamese regiment. Fairbank told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that the United States should maintain “firmness backed by force” in South Vietnam while inviting China to participate in the world scene. William Orville Eaton aged 41, one of three Klansmen charged with the murder of civil rights worker Viola Liuzzo, died of a heart attack at his home. Eaton and fellow defendants Eugene Thomas and Collie Wilkins Jr. were previously convicted in Montgomery on conspiracy charges related to voter rights demonstrations in the Selma Montgomery area. The state had indicted the trio for Liuzzo’s highway slaying in Lowndes County on March 25, 1965.
