Five of Seven Dallas Escapees Recaptured

Seven prisoners escaped from Dallas County Jail during the Ruby murder trial melee. Four were recaptured shortly after, a fifth was found at a residence, and two remained at large. During the escape a hostage, Ruth Thornton, confronted an escapee with a pistol. Little Lynn Bennett, a former Carousel Club worker pregnant and near due date, witnessed the scene and later testified.

Coast Guard hunts downed plane in Lake Michigan

Toll rises as Wisconsin traffic deaths reach new high

The Associated Press reports Wisconsin’s 1964 highway toll reached 160 with two separate crashes claiming Gail Book' 19, of Kenosha, and Bryan Behneke 23, of Kenosha. They had stopped to assist a stalled vehicle when struck by oncoming cars. Another fatal crash near Unity on Highway 13 killed Wayne Schnabel, 20, of Clark County.

South Vietnamese Drive Kills Two Guerrillas Near Saigon

South Vietnamese forces killed two Communist guerrillas and captured 33 Friday near Saigon in Vinh Binh province in the Mekong Delta. The operation was conducted by civil guards and a regular army unit with air support. government casualties were not disclosed.

MacArthur Faces Recovery After Gallbladder Operation

General Douglas MacArthur, 84, undergoing gall bladder removal and bile duct stone extraction at Walter Reed Army Hospital, was found to have obstructive jaundice caused by stones rather than cancer. Surgeons cleared the bile duct, removed the gall bladder, and expect recovery in two to four weeks with no further surgery planned.

Improvement Program for UW Madison Stages plan to expand Camp Randall

Hundreds Routed By High Water Across Four States

Ice choked rivers overflowed ripping boats from moorings and forcing hundreds from homes across four northeast states. A Great Lakes storm dumped heavy snow and frigid temps. Two Berlin Wisconsin brothers died in a seven foot water pool, a Crawfordsburg Indiana boy drowned at a sewage plant, a Milwaukee couple found dead in a car buried by snow drift, and a six mile long ice gorge disrupted the Allegheny River from Rimerton to Pittsburgh. Three Children Die In State Fire In Newton

Three children perished when a house trailer burned in Newton Wisconsin. The parents were hospitalized in Manitowoc for shock and the father suffered lacerations reentering the trailer. Fire reported at 8 59 am. Names of victims not yet released. Newton lies about eight miles south of Manitowoc.

Fire destroys cottage. man dies from burns

Alfred Layne, 56, of Los Angeles died after a fire in his cottage. Fire officials said the blaze started in a storage compartment of a wooden leg Layne wore below the left knee. He was pulled from an overstuffed chair but suffered burns over 95 percent of his body.
