Mine Disaster at Catsburg Leads to Deadly Blaze

An explosion and raging fire trapped miners at the Catsburg mine near Monongthela Pennsylvania. Rescue teams battled flames as reports placed 10 to 30 workers inside, including machinist John Huger and laborer James Turan who were burned while aiding others.

General Hoffman Dead At Seventy Nine In Philadelphia

General William Hoffman died at his Philadelphia home on March 6 from congestion of the lungs. He was 79. He organized Company E, Twenty third Pennsylvania volunteers, rose to lieutenant colonel of the Fifty sixth Pennsylvania, and led Heath's brigade after Heath was wounded. He became a brigadier general in August after Gettysburg.

Maine claims denied by Spanish treaty claims commission

Washington March 6 the Spanish treaty claims commission ruled against individual claims by officers and seamen of the Maine in Havana harbor wreck. It held such injuries are national, not individual, and the claimants may seek redress only from the United States. Total claims filed amount to about 2.5 million dollars, possibly rising to 5 million if the decision favored them.

Remains of John Liord to be moved for funeral service
