New Rochelle New York attorney Murray Levine declares the way is open to ransom his 12 year old son Peter Levine missing since returning from school. He urges kidnappers to contact him within days and offers to pay the $60,000 demanded while police and federal authorities say they will not interfere. A delivered letter reportedly contained no clear offer or connection to the case.
Berlin. The Rev. Martin Niemoeller, a Protestant opponent of the Nazi regime, has been placed in a concentration camp by the Gestapo. His wife learned today that Niemoeller was sent to the Lichtenhausen camp in Saxony despite a previous release. He had faced seven months on charges of attacking Nazi leaders and misusing the pulpit, but the court ruled his sentence already served while awaiting trial.
A storm flood across five counties in southern California left 164 known dead or missing, with unofficial damage estimates over 10 million dollars.
