The Germanic club in Chicago welcomed Prince Henry of Prussia with a formal luncheon and reception after wreath laying at Lincoln Park. Governors, mayors, and diplomats joined the prince as crowds gathered for the public ceremony and club celebration.
At its annual meeting in New York on March 4 the Society for the Protection of Italian Immigrants reported a relief pledge of 22 040 from the home government and promised further aid as provided by the consulate.
Washington March 4 AP reports Representative Belmont of New York is briefly in better condition after an illness. The congressman’s status improved slightly as medical updates were released from Washington.
Special to The Northwestern reports Secretary Root rejects the army board plan for a drill camp near Camp Doughlis Wisconsin and orders General Gilespie to survey alternatives. Secretary Ryan favors a camp near the Canadian border as the preferred site. The Philippine tariff bill moves toward the president as the war revenue repeal discussion continues in Congress.
A morning blaze at the Tremont hotel in Marshalltown Iowa destroyed about half the city block. Fourty guests fled as fire cut off escapes, with several guests and employees injured including waitresses and the landlord. Two missing persons were reported but later accounted for. Fire started at the elevator base and spread rapidly through the building.
The Ottawa, en route from Philadelphia to London, reached the Azores after sighting the Cunard liner Ferrariay towed by the William Clift about four hundred miles west of Fayal. The Etruria lost its propeller and steering gear February 26 and drifted through a night of heavy seas. Captain Stephens' calm leadership steadied the crew while efforts to tow continued amid wind and sea.
Madison Wis March 4 Six men paid fines from 25 to 104 and five were jailed in a federal court case for carrying whisky on the Ghanah reservation or supplying Indians. Eleven arrests were made by deputy U S marshals after indictments by the grand jury. Dora McCarty who runs a saloon between Ashland and the reservation was the worst offender. Several charges were filed against Alm and Mz, costing 10 in fines. John McNeat of Tayfield and Victor Du Boise, Joseph Pritz of Ashland paid each. John Cloud and John Roundwin of Odanah paid 25 each. Albert Gilstad Chris Downey Albert Martine ll of Ashland and Mat Matson and John Green of Odanah could not pay fines and faced jail time.
Apriston Illinois March 4 The Fox River Valley Telephone office workers walked out after an hours conference with Capt John M Baer Secretary of the company. Five girls accuse office superintendent A Creher of being too friendly with an operator and threaten to file a complaint. Creher denies being dictated to by his assistants and Capt Taer returns from Milwaukee to assume duties as new superintendent. a settlement was expected today.
New Menasha company name appears as Wenashi fee and Pael Company reorganized with capital stock of 900. Articles filed with Wisconsin secretary of state notes formation of The Menasha Ice and Parl Company of Menasha for distributing wood coal and lumber. Incorporators listed as Charles A. Rotineon August J. Henning and H. A. Fisha.
Floods in Wyominga Valley and northeastern Pennsylvania cause extensive property loss including thousands of homes and factories. Dozens of towns face evacuations and operations halt as waters recede slowly. Albany reports relief as ice breaches open passes while trains remain severely delayed and power houses flooded.
The funeral for Kathryn De Foe aged 2 formerly of Oshkosh was held Monday at St Antion’s Catholic Church in Chicago with Rev. Cremmens officiating. Many Oshkosh and Chicago residents attended including Alderman Thomas Riley and Kathryn Thomas among others. Interment was at Mt Olivet Cemetery. Numerous tributes were sent by friends and relatives from Oshkosh and Chicago.
In Trenton on March 4 Senator Gebharet introduced a senate bill to reveal and dissolve the charter and corporate existence of the Northern Securities company. The bill alleges the trust was formed to enable rival lines to violate laws and destroy competition in passenger and freight rates, with the governor of Minnesota already taking action to prevent harmful aims. The measure was referred to the committees on corporations.
The Central Wisconsin Medical club elected officers at the Athearn hotel. President Dr W L Titus of Dehler, first vice president Dr Ackerman of Fond du Lac, second vice president Dr G W Pannen of Manitowoc, secretary Dr W H Johns ton. Afternoon papers were read by Dr W Webrd Beaver Dam Dr G Patchen Manitowoc Te S D P Greene wood Neenah and Dr H W Johnston of this city.
A Harzismith dispatch reports Boer General De Wet was shot in the arm during a recent attempt to breach the blockhouse line near Harrismith and Van Reenen. Prisoners from the region provided the account to the press.

Chicago March 4. Prince Henry and suite arrive in Milwaukee by special train at four o’clock. A grand public reception at the exposition building follows a 3000-strong German war voters crowd parade and flag decorations across city streets. Wien flags fly at city hall as German and US leaders are toasted at Langue tonight with a banquet, Prince Henry later viewing Milwaukee landmarks.
United States comptroller calls for bank condition reports as four Oshkosh national banks publish February 2% figures. Loans and discounts rise by 491 21 and deposits by 226 125 56 since April 1901, signaling robust city prosperity despite two state banks excluded from totals.
State convention failed to materialize in this city as many members were unavailable. Only grand lodge leading officers attended a three o clock business meeting at Ellis'he corner Main and Church streets. A later convention date was hoped, with about sixty delegates and friends expected from twenty lodges. Milwaukee Force members missed due to Prince Henry celebration. John D. Voss and Martin Moore named as grand officers.
The WAtlakean society of the Normal challenged the Lreeum society to a joint debate on interstate railroads and a proposed policy. Lyceum supports the resolution while Philakean opposes. Lawrence Johnesn and others will represent Lyceum. Velin and Rewther for Philakean. The debate will occur during the last hit of the fourth quarter.
In a pols, authorities say no Sunday baseball allowed due to violations of the tale law. A major American exhibition schedule is set, with manager Waikine calling the event a Sunday ball or none at all, stirring debate and tension over the prohibition.
