Attorneys for both sides in the Cooper Sharp murder trial of former Senator Carmack continued in conference. Witnesses remain to be called as cross examination plans were laid. the state will not recall Governor Patterson for cross examination due to jury leanings and lack of new facts.

Mine blast kills four at Simond mine in Butte

Four men die in an early March accident at the Simond mine in Butte as a premature discharge and falling rock entomb workers. Seventeen to twenty holes were drilled, and recovery efforts took hours. In Wilkesbarre, Pennsylvania, a separate mine explosion at the Delaware and Hudson Coal Co. injures one worker and risks ten to fifteen entombed miners as fire and smoke hamper rescue efforts.

Farewell Senate Speech Highlights Large Apporpriations

Washington March 8 senior Hemenway spoke to the senate on his farewell address noting that aggregate appropriations over the last eight years exceeded estimates by large margins. He outlined reductions over seven years and contrasted funding demands from incentive departments and citizens with the need to curb expenses while congress debated the appropriation bill. The full agreement on the appropriation bill was reported and approved.

Baldwin's Wills Filed In San Francisco Court

The Baldwin estate, valued around 25000, is placed in probate by attorney W Teetelly. Daughters Clara Baldwin Stocker of Arcadia Anita Baldwin McTaughrey of Berkeley and Zelda Relby of San Francisco receive large land bequests including the Baldwin ranch of over 20000 acres. The widow Tilly Bennett Baldwin gets a one third share of properties on Market Street known as the Baldwin annex.
