Wisconsin Fiscal Debate near Deadline in Madison
With a midnight Wednesday deadline for action the Wisconsin Legislature faces a stalemate over how to finance a record budget for 1966 68. The Democratic majority on the Joint Finance Committee refused to sponsor a compromise package while Gov. Warren Knowles seeks renewed talks. The proposed 812.1 million biennial budget takes effect Thursday as current appropriations expire. A bipartisan committee backed a 105.2 million tax package including an income tax hike and new taxes to back the budget but the Finance Committee would not introduce it without Knowles as sponsor. Meanwhile the Assembly Conservation Committee will hear plans for a Wisconsin State Land Acquisition Corp to buy 200000 acres in Menominee County for recreation.

Seven Drownings Reported in Wisconsin Weekend
Seven people died in Wisconsin over the weekend including a father who perished while trying to rescue his daughter.
