Relief for Salem fire sufferers poured in as half the city lay in ruins. Insurance covered many losses while funds from Henry C. Frick and others bolstered a $100000 relief plan. President Wilson and Governor Walsh sought federal aid as three lives were confirmed lost in the disaster.
A strong quake in southern Sumatra today caused many deaths and injuries as Benkoelen's Dutch offices and numerous buildings collapsed. Telegraph and cable сервис were disrupted and the British steamer Kintuck, carrying emigrants, was reported ten hours overdue with fears of disaster connected to the quake.
