In Milwaukee a record rainfall overwhelmed the city as Grand Avenue area floodwaters surge. A small creek turned into a rushing river, making houses along the Piggs Ville section uninhabitable and prompting emergency responses.
Washington dispatch explains regulations for drafting the national army awaiting President Wilson approval. The process will be centralized in Washington with 10 million registrants and an initial 425000 to be assembled, exemptions to be handled by local boards, and conditions to have drafted men in training by September. An American freighter repelled a German U-boat attack on June 6 near Genoa Italy. The vessel fired on the submarine after it fired a torpedo missing by twenty feet. A hit shattered the periscope and the sub disappeared with no damage to the freighter. This marks a second such defense reported within two days.
Milwaukee dispatch reports that the Lutheran Missouri district convention unanimously approved a resolution to broaden English instruction.
