An Associated Press dispatch from the Austrian front quotes a prisoner from a manufacturing firm in many world centers including New York. He claims Austria faces bread and potato shortages, estimates the army cannot last months, and notes German food conditions are as bad as Austria’s. He says Americans may not be needed to defeat the Allies and discusses morale and shelling contrasts near Asiago.
Vienna labor council calls for substantial wartime food relief and speedy general peace while Vienna and Neustadt seethe over bread reductions. Postal inspectors nab traveling Western Union Telegraph agents on trains between Boston and Washington and seize sultcanas filled with messages used for telegraph transmission. The practice, alleged to have operated for some time, violates postal laws barring non postal workers from handling communications over post roads. Grand jury will review facts, company officials to be summoned to explain. Penalty includes fines up to 500 dollars or imprisonment up to one year.
An American steamer arriving from a Central American port reported sighting a German submarine 180 to 200 miles south of Sandy Hook at 4 p m yesterday and escaping as the submarine pursued. A Gulf Port coastwise steamship also reported a near miss off South Carolina but evaded due to speed and a wireless call for help.
Two hundred soldiers at Camp Robinson near Sparta Wisconsin will be naturalized by Judge P C M hieho of La Crosse on Friday. The ceremony, arranged with the U S naturalization examiner and the camp commander, will be held in the cantonment to avoid travel to the county seat. Pledge and patriotic observances accompany the naturalization. Officers elected at the Knights of Pythias Grand Lodge session in Athras Milwaukee include John Barron as grand chancellor and other officers from Wisconsin cities.
