Berlin dispatch reports envoys arriving for the Berlin Congress with ceremonial processions and royal receptions. Lord Beaconsfield may lead a bold peace initiative, while Catholic health concerns and Belgian Liberal gains shape Europe’s outlook amid international maneuvering.
Prince Gortchakof arrives in Berlin wrapped in thick furs and carried from the train to his carriage due to illness. His condition raises concerns as he is attended by aides and officials.
The Potter Investigating Committee held a secret session in which Gen. Smith testified about Anderson's Treasury appointment and a letter to the President. In the House, contest of Richardson v Rainey and the Silver and Harbor bill led to suspension attempts and a heated clash, ending with Eden's suspension motion defeated. In the Senate, bills on customs salaries passed while a repeal of the specie resumption act was debated, with a large party split and voting records noted.
The Matthews committee in Washington convened on June 13 to probe any connection Senator Matthews may have with Louisiana election affairs. Senators Edmunds chairing the panel included Allison Ingalla Hoar Davie Whyte and Jones with James F Anderson and the sergeant at arms present.
About 1,000 people attended the June 13 graduation of the first class at West Point. President Hayes and Gen Schofield appeared, delivering remarks on duty and American manhood, with brief addresses from the Secretary of War and Attorney General Devens. Diplomas were then presented.
Galveston News Special says General Mencio died near the Mexican Government troops. General McKenzie and Col Shafer led a force into Mexico chasing raiders about forty miles north of Eagle Pass and then crossed back to Texas for reinforcements. Twenty cavalry companies and artillery with two rifles and two Gatling guns were dispatched. Fort Clark suspects the raiders may have re entered Mexico.

Reports say armed ranchers gather at Kewler's store awaiting potential Indian attack tonight or tomorrow. A new company is being organized to join once arms arrive from state authorities.
In Chicago a Bohemian man named Jacob Villinger shot his wife through the heart, then beat and strangled her in a drunken rage. He accused her of infidelity when questioned and was later confined. The incident follows a pattern of alleged jealousy and violence.
Washington reports mixed conditions for the upper lake region with rising then falling barometer, near stationary temperatures, and possible northeast winds. Aroostook County Maine lists sixteen starch factories and a potato yield ranging from twenty thousand to one hundred thousand bushels per factory at twenty to twenty five cents per bushel. The 1877 US fruit crop value is cited at about $140,000, roughly half the cereals total.
