South Forces Claim Victory In Wage Fight

Southern senators claimed victory in a year long battle for a lower minimum wage in the industrial north. They pressed for broad exemptions from a 40 cent hourly wage scale, with seven years to implement, and proposed boards to grant industry wide and regional exceptions. The conference committee set a base of 25 cents, with a possible 30 cent rise in year two, and boards to push toward 40 cents while trimming weekly hours, but the exemption scope remained contested. Separately, progress was noted on a $3.723 billion relief and public works bill as the WPA allotment rose to $1.425 billion.
