Pickets Clash In Mahoning Valley Strike Tension

In Youngstown Ohio officials sought an order to curb picketing at Sheet and Tube and other mills after clashes along a bridge. Judge Lynn B. Griffith issued a writ to stop aggressive tactics as police and deputies escorted demonstrators away. The standoff followed a boxcar incident and rail damage as the seven state strike by steelWorkers spread.

IRD WORKERS IN CALIFORNIA PLANT TURN DOWN PACT

Richmond California union members of the CIO led United Automobile Workers rejected a tentative peace pact by a two to one vote at the Richmond Ford plant. The strike continues with plans to reopen the plant next Monday. Details of the agreement were not released and picket withdrawal was not confirmed. In New York Samuel D. Derby won the Belmont Stakes over 40,000 fans as War Admiral led early before finishing second. Maxwell Howard's Scene was third in the race.

Wisconsin Milk Pool Convention Opens Monday

Oshkosh prepares to host the Wisconsin Cooperative Milk Pool convention with 1500 delegates from about four counties. The three day program features a Friday parade, addresses by Gov. La Follette and Mayoress, plus a ladies auxiliary session and a dance at the Eagles club. The event aims to discuss selling force development and possible affiliation with the Farmers Equity union.

Wisconsin music festival gathers 250 ensembles on UW campus

About 2,500 student musicians from 165 Wisconsin high schools competed in a one day solo and ensemble festival at the University of Wisconsin. Competition began in morning sessions and continues into night with 15 judges evaluating 901 solo and 250 ensemble events across three divisions. The festival is sponsored by the Wisconsin Music Association.

Neenah Lands Held Not Subject to Tax

In Neenah an armory property held in trust by Samuel A. Cook for Company T Wisconsin National Guard was deemed not subject to the Wisconsin gift tax. Atty Gen Loomis advised Adjt Gen Immell that the 1907 agreement and the $5,000 directive were not a gift but a title-clearing act, with proposed quitclaims by interested parties to release the executor from liability.

Lumberjacks Strike Likely to End at Nightfall in Munising

In Munising Michigan Deputy Labor Commissioner Joseph Ashmore said the 6000 Sawmill and Lumber Workers union strikers would probably end their walkout by nightfall after talks on wage and hour demands. Union leaders planned a 2 pm meeting to vote on returning to work, easing tensions at the Alger County courthouse and the Newberry Lumber and Chemical Company plant amid fears of renewed rioting. Arrests included Joe Liss, chairman of the strike committee, on a conspiracy to incite a riot charge, and his lieutenant David Le Clair. Police maintained riot readiness as officials advised union leaders to leave town.

Teacher slayers get life terms in South Dakota case

Naaman Westberg and Howard Christensen, both 17, pleaded guilty in circuit court to murder and were sentenced to life with hard labor by Judge John F. Hughes. They admitted shooting Ada Carey, a school teacher, and beating her with a hammer during a failed robbery after giving them a ride. the judge lamented the lack of capital punishment in the state.

Body of Miner Found After Underground Collapse at Mine

John Kavach, identified as the father of one victim, was recovered from the Pioneer mine in Fly, Minnesota, at 1,300 feet underground.
