In Dumas Texas a refinery pentane tank exploded killing 19 men and injuring 31 others including an 11 year old. Volunteers fought flames as calm winds limited spread to adjacent tanks in Shamrock Oil and Gas Co McGee refinery.
In SAC CITY IOWA a 7% year-old woman, unable to walk unaided, was found after lying six days at the foot of a steep hill near her 0-acre farm. Neighbors reported she had been trying to fog out a blaze caused by a large pentane leak from a tank. Fifteen killed, four died later, many seriously injured in the explosion and fire.
The Wisconsin highway fatality toll rose to 534, five deaths in a Saturday crash and multiple weekend accidents. Names include Gwenn Soldner, Vyron Heiden, Robert Van Guilder, Ray Seidel, and Nels Nelson, among others, with injuries reducing the toll as counts updated.
London reports Britain stops all arms shipments to Egypt and seeks an international board to govern the Suez Canal to prevent unfettered single-power control. Eden defends the move in Parliament after talks with Murphy Pineau Lloyd as Western allies push for measures to secure free canal passage.
Mrs. McKeen slipped during a Monday walk and tumbled down a hill losing her crutches. She fatigue and weak calls for help while neighbors and eight farmers joined a search, finding her at the bottom of the hill after papers and mail were left on her porch.
In Hillsboro Ohio a mound near a well drilling project in Dod son Township bears a marker stating Here lies the last man that asked us how deep we've gone. The odd stone adds local curiosity to the ongoing drilling activity nearby.
Madison reports a new Wisconsin driver point system to be enacted Wednesday. Violations carry points from one to twelve, with suspensions after 12 points in 12 months, 24 points in 36 months, or 38 points in six months. Reckless driving, speeding, and violations under 3 years old influence point totals. Iran floods also noted with hundreds dead or missing.
A Sunday gale in the English Channel killed 19 people as yachts in a cross channel race vanished or were found adrift. Winds reached 90 miles per hour with massive waves, capsizing vessels, wrecking ships, and halting cross channel service while rescuers searched ports for missing crews.
S Sgt Elwyn B Scarborough testified at the court martial of S Sgt Matthew C McKeon that he offered two vodka drinks during a 50 minute discussion on improving recruit marksmanship. The April 8 incident led to a disciplinary march by Ribbon Creek where six recruits drowned.
In Budapest a parliamentary disclosure reports the Hungarian foreign minister ousted amid a government reshuffle after Matyas Rakosi’s dismissal as Communist party chief. Imre Horvath, 50, an old-line diplomat once minister to Washington, replaces him. several other changes follow.
Washington dispatch reports Harold E. Stassen, White House disarmament adviser, met with President Eisenhower at Gettysburg, Pa. to discuss topics likely including Nixon’s renomination. Stassen flew to the President’s farm at his request and returned to Washington without details. Humprey enters Democratic VP race, says he is willing to have friends campaign for him but opposes attacks on other contenders.
Only seven persons attended Sunday morning services at Courtland Community Church. Pastor Rev. Robert Clarie mimeographed his sermon and mailed copies to absentees.
Harold L. Plummer, chair of the State Highway Commission, says federal approval is expected in 60 days for a new four lane interstate route between Madison and Chicago, via Genoa City. Wisconsin plans 505 miles of interstate highways, with 90 percent federal funding. a 1959 completion target is set for a Madison Beloit segment not within the interstate, while Genoa City to Madison receives an aerial survey contract.
Nine teen climbers, mostly from New York area, plunged into a 40 foot crevasse on Mt Hood. One youth Lynn Kaufman of Larchmont N.Y. died. 9 seriously injured, 16 stretcher cases. Rescue teams used planes and ambulances from Timberline Lodge to move injured down the mountain to Portland.
A Kurajima volcano on Japan’s Kagoshima coast erupted twice today, rumbling and spewing ash over the region. No damage was reported though the volcano is noted for frequent minor eruptions.
