A moving car fired on a Negro motorist in Cleveland injuring Benoris Toney 29, the 10th gunshot victim in five nights of East Side unrest. Police and National Guardsmen had kept order after fires and looting while six white youths were detained. Authorities seek a sniper as fear of a rough weekend grows.
The death toll in Wisconsin roads for 1965 rose to 416, three more than a year ago on this date. Orville P Janisse, 46, of Plymouth, died from injuries in a two car crash near Plymouth. A Friday collision at a Highway 29 crossing near Wausau killed Anne Luedtke, 67, of Milwaukee, with a passenger and the other driver injured.
In East New York a moving car with four Negroes fired on two white men at 2 am wounding Frank Toledo 24 in the abdomen and Gregorio Cruz 35 in the buttock. Police reported 1,700 officers on the streets as disorders spread and 15 people arrested.
Attorneys said the defendant, accused of shop lifting in Gateshead England, was driven to theft by loud pop music from transistor radios at her workplace. The case was dismissed.
Washington AP Sen Russell B Long plans a public inquiry into drug prices and federal health programs. He warns Americans pay 400 times too much for some drugs and pushes a bill requiring prescribing and dispensing of Medicare drugs by chemical names.
Madison Wisconsin AP reports the Governor's Commission on Law Enforcement and Crime will study methods to help municipalities tackle unruly motorcycle gangs. Justice Bruce F Beilfuss ordered the study after Gov Warren Knowles pledged special aid. The governor notes local law enforcement face challenges with cycle groups traveling through less urban areas and has deputized National Guard state patrol civil defense and conservation wardens to assist communities when needed.
MADISON AP Major Wisconsin roads with sections closed for construction and detours were listed by the State Highway Department. Counties show multiple routes with mileage and nearby towns including Hertel Marshfield Ripon Ripon Albany East Troy and Eagle among others.
Washington AP reports airline strike talks stay deadlocked as walkouts cause multimillion dollar losses in wages and profits. Negotiators offered little optimism while federal efforts and a congressional emergency proposal failed to break the stalemate. Continuous talks resume midmorning with Assistant Secretary Reynolds noting limited progress. Senator Morse urged a national emergency measure enabling federal courts to order a settlement.
Secretary of the Navy Paul H. Nitze says the United States is weighing the future disposition of 19 North Vietnamese sailors held as prisoners. He did not rule out a possible exchange for captured U S airmen. The sailors, captured in June in the Gulf of Tonkin, remain in U S custody as debate over a swap grows. Also in Washington, Secretary of State Dean Rusk urged Britain and the Soviet Union to reconvene the Geneva talks for a peaceful Vietnam settlement. Rusk warned that expanding the conflict risks a larger war but stressed keeping open the path to an amicable end. In Paris, a French diplomat suggested American prisoners would be tried but not executed. Seizure of a Japanese Mangyo Maru fishing boat by a Soviet patrol near Shikotan island was reported from Nemuro Japan.
U S infantrymen in helicopters pound a Viet Cong bunker complex about 25 miles from Saigon in a rapid assault described as fast and furious. To the north Marines report 55 more North Vietnamese killed in eight days of heavy fighting totaling 576. Thunderchiefs clash with MiG 17s in a brief air duel over oil depots and rail lines. Australian troops begin a new clearing operation 38 miles southeast of Saigon as Thai contingents arrive. A Skyhawk from Oriskany is shot down over North Viet Nam. pilot rescued at sea. Loss of a light observation plane and two crew killed nearby. a second plane collides during Hastings.
Manila AP report says more than four Communist terrorists in central Luzon are receiving mass arms and equipment from unknown sources. President Marcos told the AP the weapons include American made automatics stolen or purchased illegally from U S bases in the Philippines as he ordered 3,000 troops into four central Luzon provinces to hunt guerrillas who killed six people recently.
Beijing pledges to fight on until the U.S. aggressors are driven from Viet Nam with joint Chinese and Vietnamese action. Liu Shao-chi declares aggression against Viet Nam is aggression against China and says preparations are ready for action anywhere at any time. Observers see a firmer stance than before.
A U S Navy pilot fled North Vietnamese captivity and, after more than 20 days in the jungle, was rescued by a U S Air Force helicopter crew in South Vietnam. Ground fighting in Hastings involved U S Marines against a North Vietnamese division with heavy casualties reported.
The US embassy said former vice president Richard Nixon his wife and two daughters will arrive in London Sunday for a private two day visit.
Governor Knowles participates in the launch of the Navy guided missile escort ship Julius A. Furer at Bath Iron Works. The ship, named for Wisconsin author, inventor and scientist Julius A. Furer, is to carry surface to air missiles and torpedoes. Knowles also fished on a private craft during a six hour coastal cruise before returning to Wisconsin for a week vacation.
