In Brooklyn riot clashes continued as mounted police dispersed roughly 1,000 mobs amid looting and vandalism. Sixty stores looted or broken into. 130 arrests by dawn, totaling 226 in two nights. Police and looters clashed. two officers injured. Mayor Wagner warned against mob rule.
Justice William Dieterich of the Wisconsin Supreme Court died at his Hartford home at age 66 after a heart condition. A Milwaukee native born December 18, 1897, he practiced law since 1923, served in WWI, and was elected to the Supreme Court in 1958. He is survived by his widow and son William H. Dieterich III.
Washington AP leaders urged Senate approval of President Johnsons 962.5 million antipoverty bill after adopting a states rights amendment aimed at winning Southern Democratic backing. Senator Goldwater attacked the measure as backward looking and vote seeking. Senate debate opened Wednesday with Senator Tower leading the opposition.
Five masked gangsters robbed a Monaco jewelry store at 10 30 am wounding one police officer and kidnapping another. Estimated loot ran as high as eight million francs about 1.6 million dollars. The gang escaped after a swift two minute raid, dropping a necklace and ring valued at about one million francs.
George W. Goltz, Oshkosh assessor, reports 1964 assessed valuations rise by 3,112,800 with land and buildings totaling 96,765,050 across 16 wards. Ward breakdown lists land and improvements per ward, continuing on page 14.
Paris AP report quotes President Charles de Gaulle declaring that things have changed and the United States no longer runs Western affairs. He urges a four power parley with the US Red China the Soviet Union and France to settle Vietnam and Indochina and to guarantee peace through a regional reconstruction program. He notes North Vietnam military action would risk a wider war and says France only seeks peace. De Gaulle also points to waning support for Diem, his overthrow, and Saigon coups.
A Trempealeau County youth, Benjamin S. Halama, 17, of rural Independence, died early today when his car left Highway 93 about two miles south of Independence. The crash, witnessed by nearby residents, raised Wisconsin’s 1964 highway toll to 562, up from 444 last year on this date.
A three alarm blaze in Madison caused an estimated minimum of 250000 in damages to a brick business building on the northeast side. Firemen worked 90 minutes to control and two more hours to extinguish. Two firefighters were overcome by smoke and one sustained a minor cut. The Berg Sele cter Co and Spencer McCord Wholesale Drug Co occupied the single story 200 by 400 foot structure. The fire was sparked by a burglar alarm in the drug firm offices.
Harold E. Stassen urged at Green Lake that America could ease racial strife by founding racially balanced churches and housing areas. He described the ideas as creative Christian ethics and said such communities might foster equal standing, while stressing they are suggestions rather than endorsements.
Dissident Southern Democrats abandon Johnson for Goldwater amid civil rights clash. Delegates in Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia face loyalty battles as Wallace withdraws, releasing delegates but many will still push his name at the convention. Signs point to a fractured solid South ahead of the presidential campaign.
Atlanta AP report says Pickrick Restaurant owner Lester Maddox and Heart of Atlanta Motel head Rolleston Jr. will appeal to the Supreme Court after a federal panel upheld the Civil Rights Act public accommodations provisions. The injunctions against the two venues were delayed to Aug. 11 for appeals. The court ruled motels and restaurants serving interstate travelers fall under interstate commerce and cannot discriminate against Negroes. Hooper concurred noting Pickrick falls within the law due to its route position and serving interstate travelers. The decision affirms Congress had power to prohibit segregation in these cases.
