Nearly 1,000 Clinton prison inmates attempt a mass escape at Dannemora New York. Guards and officers open fire as convicts surge the walls. two officers are injured and two inmates die. Prisoners regroup after hours of chaos as state troopers and others restore order.
New York skipper Dusty mies leads rival Martha Jane in a 26-foot boat race from New Orleans to St Louis aiming to beat the 1870 steamboat record of ninety hours thirty minutes set by Robert E. Lee. The Bogie with three aboard held a commanding early lead fading to speed estimates as Baton Rouge and Plaquemine were passed. Participants include Dr Lois Lerey of Memphis, Bob Hunter and Harvey Brown of Memphis, and owner George M M Cox of New Orleans with a septet aboard the Martha Jane.
Indianapolis report states Gilbert Ammerman confessed to aiding in the August 20 1928 Exchange State bank holdup at Golden Illinois, leading to Everett Howell’s eight month Illinois penitentiary sentence being overturned. Howell had been identified by the bank president as a bandit after his 1928 conviction. John Barnhill and Peter McDonald are noted in the wider case with varying involvement and appeals.

In Willsville Wisconsin after a three day pow wow Winnebago chief Monegar presided as Gov Walter Kohler was named Wah-Noig-Cha-Ja-Ga and admitted to tribal membership. About three hundred Indians attended and 5,000 spectators watched the ceremony. The governor’s Indian name Red Bird reflected his arrival by airplane to Pittsville and gifts were exchanged between the Kohlers and the tribal leaders.
Two men and two women were taken into custody in a Birmingham hotel in a $342,000 armored car heist probe. They identified themselves as Raymond Robertson of Cornersville Missouri and his wife, and Joe Mascio and his wife Ruby of Shreveport. Cascio claimed the machine gun under his pillow had twenty-one notches. Robertson was armed with a revolver.
Commissioner Doran announced that five to six distilleries will resume production under government supervision to replenish the national whiskey supply. The move aims to restore about 1.4 million gallons of bourbon and 600,000 gallons of rye whiskey next year, with storage plans to cover a four year aging cycle.

A bandit robbed a Milwaukee drugstore of $109 yesterday while a customer read a newspaper. He forced the clerk into the prescription room, bound and gagged him, and disappeared. Police had not captured the robber at the time.
