Angllican vicar Rev. Hugh Jones said villager Frank Mullan acted in bad taste by inviting Christine Keeler to open the village fair in Risborough England. Keeler did not appear.
Wisconsin toll for highway deaths rose with two more fatalities. Edward Hoskens, 44, of De Pere died after a head on collision on Highway 57 near his home. Roland Olson, 32, of Racine, died from injuries after his car overturned on a Racine street. Richard Kolbeck, 25, of Marshfield was killed by a tank truck while working on Highway 20 near Withee.
The Wisconsin Assembly remains focused on the budget tax plan as the Senate adjourned for recess. Formal debate on the Republican bill begins late today amid tax and sales tax extension battles, with the chamber likely meeting into next week. The Senate, meanwhile, will resume formal sessions Tuesday unless action occurs sooner. A related bill banning the sale and manufacture of all degradable detergents after December 31, 1985 passed the Senate 27 to 1, though Board of Health and Conservation Department opposition cooled momentum.
In Chicago, Mary Jane Dunlap 39 was arrested after a newborn was returned to her West Side apartment following an FBI search tied to an interstate kidnapping from Metropolis Illinois. Lori Ann Burnham, 18 days old, was taken by a woman posing as a Massac Memorial contest official. The infant, found at Dunlap’s home, was intact and healthy, and Dunlap faces charges and a mental examination request.
Douglas Coenen, three, of rural Appleton died at St Marys Burn Center after burns from a grease spill at home. Born March 28, 1960, he survived by parents, a brother Stephen and two sisters. Mass at St Pius Church, Maene a Funeral Home call after 2 pm Sunday, burial St Joseph Cemetery.
A six member fact finding committee delivered its report on railway work rules to President Kennedy. The panel, led by Labor Secretary Willard Wirtz, prepared the document with help from labor and commerce staff and plans to send it to Congress with Kennedy’s legislative proposals to block a nationwide rail strike. Kennedy aims to study the findings over the weekend in Hyannisport and present recommendations Monday. The report notes possible compulsory arbitration as the likely approach and reflects consensus from rail carriers and operating unions though minor revisions were suggested by both sides.
Uriah Bryant Jr. of Chicago, 54, drowned near a Marquette County community on Thursday when he fell into Buffalo Lake while attempting to recover a fishing pole dropped from a bridge. Local authorities reported the drowning incident and identified the victim.
Police in Japan link a lengthy forest fire series to a 43 year old Buddhist priest who reportedly threw flaming paper balls into woods from his motorcycle during parish rounds as he attempted to watch the fires burn.
Premier Khrushchev voiced optimism for a Big Three accord on a limited nuclear test ban in Moscow and said he favored outlawing all tests including underground ones. He suggested tying a nonaggression pledge to the talks and offered to permit Western inspections to ease tensions, while noting the US and Britain still seek international oversight.
Premier Khrushchev told a Kremlin audience during a rally for Hungarian Premier Janos Kadar that a world war is neither necessary nor desirable to advance socialism or communism.
