A heat wave sent Wisconsin temperatures soaring with readings from 72 to 90 degrees in Milwaukee and Madison reaching the 90s. The state saw 101 in Janesville and 100 in La Crosse as forecasters predicted continued warmth, with no fatalities but seven prostrations reported.
Five masked burglars robbed a Delaware County National Bank branch in Chester, taking $48,000 from the cashier and fleeing in a car. The payroll money for local plants was held up just before shipment, with employees and customers ordered to lie on the floor. The bank serves industrial plants in the area.
Washington United Press reports President Roosevelt has directed advisers to prepare estimates of relief needs for fiscal year 1937, signaling continued heavy relief costs despite works program gains. Kenosha health officials urged bathers to stay away from local beaches after Tony Stepanitis 18 contracted smallpox and left the shore while under quarantine. Stepanitis was captured near his home and faces a charge for violating state health laws when quarantines end. Police reported a two year sequence of armed bank and filling station raids across Wisconsin ended with the arrest of three men and two women. Frank Prohaska said the group confessed to four bank robberies and several station hold ups since 1933, with loot totaling about 3600 dollars plus stolen vehicles.
