Three-Home Collapse Traps Five in Philadelphia Sewer Cave
A sewer cave in West Philadelphia collapsed four homes, trapping at least five people. Rescue crews pulled two survivors, a 70 year old wife and a 9 year old sister, as gas and power were shut to about 34 nearby structures. The third and fourth houses vanished into the massive chasm formed by the earlier collapses. City officials described an underground wreck along a 13 foot diameter sewer, possibly caused by erosion or collapse of the brick tunnel built in 1830.
