Several hundred Negro youths looted stores and shattered windows along a one mile Roosevelt Road strip in Chicago's near southwest side. Police and leaders including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. helped quell the disturbance as 24 were arrested and several injured. Young Irishman Apologizes To Queen After Attack

Joint Chiefs aide tied to espionage case unfolds
Washington AP A former military aide to the Joint Chiefs of Staff is accused of conspiring to pass defense data to the Soviet Union. William Henry Whalen a retired Army lieutenant colonel is named in a federal grand jury indictment detailing secret knowledge on atomic weapons missiles and SAC retaliation plans. He allegedly received 5500 dollars on six occasions between December 1959 and March 1961 from two Soviet Embassy officials who have returned home. Whalen was arrested Tuesday in suburban Alexandria Pennsylvania and arraigned on the espionage conspiracy charge. He posted 15000 dollar bond and was released. The two Soviets Sergei Edemski and Mikhail Shumaev are named as co conspirators. The indictment was returned by a grand jury.
