Senator Copeland of New York urged President Roosevelt and congressional leaders to drop the court bill and pursue harmony within the Democratic Party. The fifth speech against the administration’s bill cited the need for unity and reforms.
Washington reports the House overrode the president’s veto of a bill to extend low interest farm loans for two more years. Copeland and Bailey pressed Democrats to unite behind Jackson Cleveland Jefferson Wilson ideals while warning disaster may follow if the party stays split.
France reasserted control over its 350 mile frontier with Spain to curb arms and men smuggling as 455 nonintervention observers await new orders. Prefects took over at noon from observers. Danish commander said no instructions received. Observers may stay as private citizens until the situation clarifies.
Reports from Peiping and Tientsin describe Japanese forces advancing from the east and south against the ancient capital. Chinese brigades near Nanyu an barracks cut off, with rail lines and communications disrupted as armored trains threaten the defenses. Civilians in Peiping seek escape while battle rages along the gates and walls.
Milwaukee police questioned two suspects in the July 7 murder of John Helwig, operator of a Wauwatosa gasoline station. One is a 34-year-old married West Allis man. the other, a 28-year-old Milwaukee man. A tailor, Arthur Wiedman, linked the West Allis man to the station exit and to registering at a hotel as Gugenheim the day of the murder. The second suspect was detained after boasting about a crime linked to Los Angeles and San Quentin.
Idle for 46 days the Youngstown Sheet and Tube plants in East Chicago and South Chicago reopen under signs stating no new agreement was made. About 1,000 arrived by train at the Indiana mill while normal shifts total 2,500 to 3,000. Leaders claim victory for the strike’s end, but the company denies any agreement and disputes the claim.
The Lexington task force with 62 planes and 300 flyers presses the Amelia Earhart rescue mission while weather hampers early efforts. Itasca and Swan head for Gilbert islands as destroyers join in, while the search pivots to a broad Pacific sweep.
Soviet airmen Mikhail Gromoff Andrei Yumoshiff and Sergei Danlin in a second trans polar flight sped toward San Francisco after crossing the North Pole. Government forces pounded insurgent lines on three fronts near Madrid and in the Basque country. Air strikes hit Santander defense zones and bombardments pressed at Zaragoza Teruel and Albarracin as streets in Albarrazin saw hand to hand fighting. Three insurgent bombers attacked Valencia, killing three and wounding several as government anti aircraft batteries repelled the raid.
London July reports Julio Alvarez Del Vayo, former Spanish foreign minister, charges Premier Mussolini met with Spanish insurgent leaders before the civil war outbreak a year ago. The claim crosses political lines as wartime tensions rise in Europe.
Labor talks proceed as Morgan officials review the Foster Lothman Mills proposal. A tour of inspection occurred Monday afternoon at the strike-bound Wisconsin Match Plant with a committee of strikers present.
A Tiflis communique reports that eight people including A. B. Mdivani were sentenced to death for treason terrorism and conspiracy in Georgia and Tiflis. They allegedly pleaded guilty to espionage for fascist circles and wrecking actions against the national economy. The court called them enemies of the people and traitors to be shot.
