Polish Major Flees Red Pressure with Family to West Berlin
Maj. Ryszard Obacz a 34 year old Polish air force jet pilot flew a two seater training plane with his wife Maria and two sons Leslaw and Krzystof from Nadarycz Poland to Templehof Airfield West Berlin seeking asylum. It was the first defection to West Berlin by air from behind the Iron Curtain. Obacz said he fled for open friendships and the right to travel speak and work freely. He noted Polish air force morale is low and that he and others want more freedoms. He admitted lying to his wife about visiting friends near the border and praised escaping to a place not pushing people around.

Two youths drowned in separate Wisconsin water accidents. Louis G. Ploeger, 18, of Birnamwood, drowned at Norrie Lake in Marathon County while testing a newly purchased skin diving face mask. Vessel Sinks as 400 Rescued After River Plate Fire
A Montevideo to Buenos Aires overnight boat, Ciudad de Asuncion, caught fire and sank in the River Plate early today. Coast guard said as many as 400 may have been rescued from 421 aboard, with 150 picked up by the King and 250 by the Murature. Dozens of vessels aided in foggy conditions. 33-year-old ship carried 550 capacity. The cause was undetermined. this followed a prior 1957 sinking with 94 deaths.
