Reports detail repeated attempts to kill Admiral Chouknin amid mutiny actions aboard the Kalaz Potemkine. The 25 year naval veteran faced death sentences after prior investigations and a surprise visit by a claimant daughter of a late admiral.
In New York July 11 Harry Thaw again denied insanity and rejected any lunacy commission to probe his mind. He urged widest publication of his statement. Roger O Mara, once Pittsburg police chief, met Thaw to discuss detective work. A letter from Sturgis in Berlin Conn to Garvan clarifies Sturgis has no plan to change address or job. Garvan will meet him later this week.
In St. Petersburg on July 1 the upper chamber debated abolition of the death penalty. Father Butka, an orthodox priest, argued the death penalty is justified by God and Christ citing Moses and Pilate. The Red newspaper laments the assembly’s discord while Novoe Vremya defends the conservative stance and warns of danger from lower house cowardice.
Four officers and nine crew were taken from the burning bark Margarita off Atlantic City on Monday by the Judge. The men, who had not been afloat, were rescued without further incident. The incident occurred as a fire forced abandonment earlier that week.
Associated Press reports Nathan Riggs, conductor on the Chicago, Milwaukee and Omaha line, arrested in Elroy, Wisconsin, in connection with the murder of Miss Millie Ellison at a National Bank of Commerce visit. Evidence suggests Riggs accompanied Ellison to the bank and a draft was cashed. Ellison’s family alleges Riggs killed the victim and he will be brought back to Minneapolis for questioning.
Bordering testimony in Beattyville Ky on July 11 details alleged pressure by ex Judge Hargis ex Sheriff Callahan and others to leave the country and refuse to testify in the Marcum murder trial. Mose E L Feltner testified about a 900 check converted to defense funds and presented to Mrs Marcum’s attorneys. Asbury Spicer recalled being pressured by Jim Hargis to affect the shooting of Marcum as he passed.
Richard Kann of Wonderland Amusement Pioneers a Milwaukee project to open an indoor New York hippodrome style venue. A 15 year lease covers Sixth Seventh and Wells streets on the old panorama site with work starting immediately. The 4000 seat arena will host an indoor circus and later convert to a fairy garden with extensive stages and a double floor. Cooperation and financing details are filed with Madison officials.
A Brooklyn engineer 24 was arrested in New York for complicity in a $50,000 London diamond robbery dated March 14, 1805. Samuel Loeckett, jailed in England, allegedly set up the swap after the salesman of Glattauer Brothers left a drugstore with a sample satchel valued at $9,000, causing the loss to go unnoticed.
W F Lyons, president of Central Ice Company, denied urging peddlers to maintain a uniform price but said he warned them not to encroach on the company’s retail trade. He testified he entered the ice business in 1900 and, amid a hot summer, raised prices twice to profit of 45000 that year without consulting anyone.

Special to The Northwestern from Milwaukee July 1 2 A Wisconsin special recounts the famous case of Fred Vogo of Franksville and William Armstrong a former husband and wife pair. Armstrong allegedly tried to shoot his wife’s head off then killed himself and attempted to take his own life. He was convicted and sentenced to the penitentiary. After release he claimed $500 was due him and attorney Giddings drew a caper.
Three men from Chicago arrived to claim a sum and produced a vigorous protest. It emerged that they had no authority, the matter was settled with Voge, but the amount remains undisclosed.
Roberta Scott, once a Civil War veteran and ex postman from Wisconsin, died today at age sixty seven. He was married to Elsie Giles Scott, once considered the state’s richest woman, and the couple had divorced two years earlier.

Special from Eau Claire reports ex senator William Vilas of Madison has been engaged as assistant counsel for Eau Claire in the action by the city to assert possession of the Dells dam and the water power derived therefrom. The suit tests the ninety nine year contract by which the Dells Improvement Company holds concession of the dam. The phrase about progress is unclear in the source.
Secretary of Agriculture Wilson praised Chicago packers for moving to sanitary conditions and said revised regulations will take effect August 1. He noted inspectors from federal reconstruction report improving nationwide and that inspections will start immediately where Sanitary conditions justify them.
New York July 11 Supreme Court Justice Truax removed Inxergoll Lockwood as trustee for part of Mrs Margaretta Todd's estate. Todd's mangled body was found near Reading railway tracks in Philadelphia last October. The will named daughter Mya Frank Tourney as principal legatee. Lockwood had been named beneficiary and trustee on personal property valued at 37.40. Mrs Tousley had contested the will to oust Lockwood, but the will was admitted to probate. The decision notes the attorney for Mrs Todd benefited under the trust and will.
An engine on the Colonial Express, southbound from Boston to Washington, broke down after a passing shower near Eastreenwich RM1 today. The locomotive plowed along the tracks for about a half mile with heavy coaches and Pullman cars. no one was hurt.

French Lick Ind July 11 Thomas Taggart president of the French Lick Springs Hotel company refused to be examined under oath by state auditor and attorney general noting law allowed books access but not forced officer examinations. State officers began book examinations of the French Lick Springs and West Baden Hotel companies to clarify relations with casinos raided last week. The quowarranto case trial is set for Paoli with Taggart and Leo Sinciatt on the stand. Taggart disclosed a 16 000 a year contract with Al Brown for casino privileges.
A midnight horse and buggy runaway at Migrath's corners near Racine injures Rev. D. E. Evans, pastor of Park Avenue Congregational Church, and David Woigley, a local merchant. Evans was knocked from the buggy with serious head and arm injuries. Welgley was pitched clear, sustaining cuts, bruises, internal injuries, and both men are reported in dangerous condition.
A St. Petersburg dispatch reports three young men in student uniforms shot and wounded a paymaster and two watchmen at the paymaster of the admiralty’s office, then fled in a cab with $12,000. The incident occurred this afternoon in London.
Newport July 1 May Sutton of California was awarded a walkover in the first round of the ladies Welsh championship tennis games as Miss Hudd scratched. Sutton advances to the next round and takes the early lead in the title pursuit.
In Chicago's federal court Judge Landis sentenced Chicago and Alton to pay 40 thousand dollars total for illegal rebates to Schwarzchild & Bulzberger. Former officials Fatthorn and Wann each face 10 thousand dollars in fines. Defense argued the rebates were public due to track ownership. An appeal was noted after sentencing.
Federal grand jury in Cleveland resumes hearings into alleged interstate commerce violations by the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern and Standard Oil. Milwaukee July 11 A Journal Special from Janesville reports Senator Whitehead selected by Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance policy holders as candidate for a board of trustees seat in next week’s election. Insurance company notified. 2,000,000 policy holders in the county. Racine Special from Milwaukee says H. T. Reden of Racine is urged as trustee candidate. he is a well-connected fraternal and insurance man sought by policy holders to represent them.
Monroe Louisiana, July. The first city owned and built street railway will begin operating soon. A. A. Forsythe announced testing for motormen will require total abstinence from all intoxicating liquors. The project, funded by municipal utilities revenues, costs taxpayers nothing directly.
