In Pittsburgh July meetings, Amalgamated Association officials and steel combine representatives resumed talks on wage scale unification. Both sides kept to secrecy with no firm settlement, signaling a decisive move or potential compromise as the conference adjourned for lunch and prepared to reconvene.
The third race in the Newport Yacht Racing Association series saw Constitution Columbia and Independence sail fifteen miles in a southwest course near Block Island. Columbia led at 1 45, Independence second, Constitution third as they fought for windward progress. Constitution later beat Columbia to the windward mark at 2 52 after a late burst of speed. Shamrock J and Shamrock II trial results were reported from Rothesay with Shamrock II taking the lead before calms.

Judge Stuart in county court holds George W Test John P Frey and Howard Wilmer in contempt for disobeying an injunction against picketing York Manufacturing Co Test and Frey leaders were fined 250 dollars and costs and jailed for thirty days. Wilmer was fined 25 dollars and released after payment.
The Virginia constitutional convention made little progress with only routine business and a main move to report no suffrage provision to an unrestricted electorate. The pending plan would deprive those disenfranchised from voting on any new constitution, sparking anticipated debate.
A Nickel Plate freight train bound east went through a collapsing bridge in Springfield Ohio. Conductor PF A Moore and engineer William Griffith were killed instantly. Seventeen workers on the bridge vanished with the wreck and many are believed buried. reports say seven or eight dead in later telegrams from Cleveland.
Malone New York July 11 About 60 workers in law and planing mills at The Upper Lake strike for a 10 hour day instead of eleven after a factory inspector ruled that a dozen boys under thirteen must not work beyond ten hours. Threats to close the mill were made and a drunken man caused some disturbance, but by noon the scene was quiet and attempts to restart the mill have been made.
Detroit July 11. The National Education Association reaffirmed its support for a national university devoted to true university work. President Jesse of Missouri urged the measure amid opposition. Dr William Breadscheer and C M Keyes were nominated for leadership. Professor George E Vincent of Chicago urged socialization of curriculum and moral aims through integrated study. Profs F W Spiers and others stressed broad economics education for citizens.
Associated Press reports the run on United Banking & Savings continued in Cleveland on July 11. Bank doors stayed open most of the night to allow anxious depositors to withdraw funds. About 200 men and women lined up early today, all demands were met, and officers said they were prepared for any emergency. The bank’s capital is $100,000 with deposits near $2,000,000.
London records a hot day with a noon shade temperature of 85 degrees and 123 in the sun. The heat caused numerous sunstrokes and prostrations, ambulances responded frequently, horses suffered, and several inquests attributed verdicts of apoplexy accelerated by the heat.
An Army War Department order increases artillery by one sixth starting July 1, adding about 1900 men as enlistments allow. An ISA dynamite magazine near the tear smelter in Denver exploded today. Two men were killed and several others injured in the blast.
A large portion of downtown Paul was burned today causing an estimated loss of 335000. The blaze damaged the main business area including several shops and a warehouse in Clear Lake Iowa involvement reported as special dispatch coverage.
