Mexico elects new president Lopez Mateos victory sealed

Adolfo Lopez Mateos, 48, former labor minister, won Mexico’s presidential race with a landslide described as 70 to 85 percent. The PRI retained control of Congress with a large majority as women voted for the first time in the presidential contest. Official returns due next week. term starts December 1 for six years.

Highway Toll Below Early Estimate For July Fourth

The Associated Press reports cautious driving kept July 4th weekend traffic deaths well under the 410 estimate. Three Drown As Boat Capsizes Off Escanaba

Three people drowned when a small sailboat capsized on Lake Michigan five miles south of Escanaba Warbor. Two survivors were picked up by a passing ore carrier. The Frontenac brought in one body and two survivors. a fishing tug recovered two of the dead, and Coast Guard boats searched for the sixth crew member.

Three Boys Blamed For Million Dollar Fire

In Hackensack New Jersey three brothers aged 7 8 and 9 were blamed for a fire that damaged eight cafes and four houses plus a gas station Saturday night. Police said they admitted starting the blaze with matches while en route to a store with empty soda bottles.

Dial Phone Service Comes to Oshkosh in New System

Oshkosh converted to dial telephone service amid a synchronized, citywide cutover led by L. J. Hart. About 73 staff oversaw the minute by minute changeover as 22 000 telephones began using the new system with instructors on duty to aid users. Local calls reached a Sunday peak of 166 398 with long distance traffic normal.

Small bomb attacks flared throughout Algeria over the weekend. There were no major engagements between nationalist rebels and the French, but four people were killed and 26 injured in individual attacks.

The Meiwa Maru moved away from dangerous radioactivity near U S nuclear test areas in the Western Pacific. Chowa Maru reported radioactivity 300 miles northwest of the Meiwa. Counts reached 409 per liter skin contact considered dangerous over a week. No injuries reported among the crew.

Conspicuous Mount Vernon youth sparks Fourth of July scare

Gary Wilkinson, 1, celebrated the Fourth of June weekend by granting himself independence and was found under a Sunday flare up. He ran away after a scolding Saturday and was retrieved after making himself conspicuous by tossing a firecracker onto a handstand during a band concert.

Eleven Injured In Elkhart Lake Train Wreck

Eleven people were injured and one hospitalized after a head on collision between a Milwaukee Road passenger train and a freight train near the Elkhart Lake depot. The wreck disrupted service until track repairs were completed Sunday afternoon. Passenger Stella Weber of Chicago was hospitalized briefly. ten others sustained minor injuries at the scene.

Million-Dollar Fire Destroys Boston Pier Structures

A fire valued at a million dollars swept a New Hayes Railroad pier on Boston's waterfront early today. It destroyed freight cars trucks and several vessels including three barges used to dispose of radioactive waste.

Castro's Rebels Free Five Held in Cuban Stronghold

Cuban rebels released five of 36 captives after days of negotiation. Among those freed were John N. Schissler and four other U.S. citizens plus a Canadian, all employees of Moa Bay Mining Co. The captives were seized near Guaro and later treated well as talks continued with Raul Castro to secure more releases and end the standoff at the Guanajay area.
