Thousands jam Menominee Park in Oshkosh for a sunlit Fourth of July celebration. The city sponsored program drew many, with entertainers and a brisk 87 degree high and a refreshing northeast breeze. Park crowds stayed massive through afternoon and evening as local events capped the holiday.
A UPI survey tallies at least 246 deaths nationwide from July Fourth celebrations. Traffic, drowning, plane crashes, and other mishaps total 164, 56, seven, and 18 respectively, with one fireworks fatality. A grandstand collapse in Estelline South Dakota injures 75, 35 seriously. In Kansas City a blast from tossed fireworks hits a speeding car. Oklahoma City youths plan a dangerous prank using firecrackers and a pipe.
Paris readers studied a revised draft of a Big Three note to Russia on German elections after West German suggestions. The note, drafted by foreign ministers in London, is said to contain secondary changes and may be delivered to the Kremlin early next week.
