Oshkosh residents prepared for Independence Day with plans for a grand observance and a weather outlook. Forecasters suggested cooler, partly cloudy conditions across eastern and central Wisconsin, easing fears of the cold 1951 Fourth. Local industries will close Friday and Saturday for the holiday as crowds anticipate a momentous weekend.
A powerful typhoon moved northwest through the central Philippines causing at least 23 deaths 42 missing and thousands made homeless. Winds up to 115 mph lashed Cebu Panay and nearby islands with widespread flooding and crop devastation. Estimated damage 214 million dollars with rice sugar and corn crops ruined and communications paralyzed.
The Oshkosh Daily Northwestern will not publish tomorrow, Independence Day, with all staff taking the day off. The Saturday edition will provide complete coverage of local, state, national, and world events.
Unseasonably warm humid weather and strong winds battered Wisconsin during a three day Independence Day period. Flooding basements and streets plagued Appleton and other cities as trees and downed power lines caused outages. Traffic deaths forecasted from prior years suggest a holiday toll, while storms across southern and central regions brought rain and high winds with some property damage.
Chicago report recalls Thomas E. Dewey four years after his Philadelphia nomination. Dewey, listed at the GOP convention, says he plans to help by running errands and carrying water. Now a leading Eisenhower supporter, he remains calm amid the crowd and anticipates a busy delegate role.
The worst weekend in Wisconsin history for deaths occurred during Labor Day in the 1950s. Ten people died in a collision of two Milwaukee suburban trains and ten more in traffic accidents. Turn to state on page 2.
East German People's Police officer Inspector Ernst Ballow and nine other Red policemen deserted to West Berlin within 24 hours. Ballow, in charge of sector border policing, said the force is being turned into a civil war instrument. He crossed with his wife and three children, bringing alleged information on future Volkspolizei plans.
TheHouse pushed a mine safety measure to the White House for signature or veto after smooth Senate approval of its amendments. The bill waives new powers to padlock dangerous mines and authorizes inspectors to close down facilities posing imminent danger, with $1.787 billion allocated for mining safety, labor and related enforcement.
At the United Nations the Soviet Union vetoed an American bid for an impartial inquiry into Communist germ warfare charges. The Security Council vote stood 1 for, 0 against, with the U S proposal calling for an investigation in Red China and North Korea by the International Red Cross. Soviet Delegate Jacob A Malik warned he would veto if Chinese and Korean Communists were not included in debate. U S Delegate Ernest A Gross condemned the veto as proving the charges false.
Austrian border observers report Yugoslavia throwing up a massive double line of fortifications along the Drava Aver region to deter a possible attack from the Hungarian Plains. Field observations from Stina in Southern Russia note visible bunkers and gun emplacements rising along the frontier.
Palmdale California area news reports Lockheed Starfire a two place all weather interceptor from F80 lineage. Tony Levier test pilot demonstrated ascent to 45000 feet and above with rapid warmup. Starfire uses 1200 pounds of electronics for automatic attacks on bombers and is moving to full production.
Madison brief reports that attorney Horace Wilkie has entered the race for a congressional post. The notice notes his profession and candidacy, with emphasis on his legal background as a platform for his campaign. The item reflects a local political development and names the candidate.
Generally fair tonight and Friday with cooler tonight. A bit warmer Friday with lows 42 to 53 in the north and 53 to 69 in the southeast. Friday expected high around 73. Reports note above average river levels and a few minutes of daylight.
An unofficial RNC tally shows 62 39 to seat the pro Taft delegation from Georgia while Wisconsin members supported the pro Taft slate Michigan committee members backed the pro Eisenhower slate in the split outcome reflecting intra party divisions.
Senate internal security subcommittee may investigate possible Communist infiltration of the Treasury Department and other fiscal agencies. Eight people died and twenty were hurt when a Greyhound bus rear collided with semis south of Winnipeg. Passengers in the front rows bore the brunt as the bus body tore open. A Scottish immigrant girl died. Walter Blendick, 23, of Toronto, described the scene as dawn revealed the wreckage. Royal Transportation Co trucks carried machinery and metal goods.
In Chicago the Taft and Eisenhower camps clash over seating Louisiana delegates ahead of the nominating convention. Taft supporters largely control the committee while Eisenhower backers vow to press their case at the convention. Illinois committeeman Werner Schroeder rebuked Lodge accusations that Georgia’s Taft victory was a steal, noting his past votes aligned with the Taft faction.
A three alarm blaze on Milwaukee’s South Side destroyed a boiler works and damaged a foundry and a warehouse in one building. Firefighters and spectators packed streets as clouds of black smoke rose. the blaze, under control in about 30 minutes, prompted investigations by Deputy State Fore Marshal Rossitter though officials saw no obvious cause. The Barclay Foundry Co. and Allen-Bradley Co. occupied the damaged areas.
