Traffic deaths during the extended Independence Day weekend appear near normal for a nonholiday period. The National Safety Council estimates the holiday travel could reach 700 to 800 fatalities by Tuesday midnight.
Gov Warren P Konwles signed a veterans bill into law in Madison that grants bonus points in state civil service exams for Vietnam era veterans. It also eases Grand Army Home admission in King near Waupaca and requires liquor seized by tax officials to go to veterans hospitals for medicinal use. The Assembly removed a section exempting military pay of servicemen outside Wisconsin from state income tax.
US jets dive bombed storage plants near Haiphong for a second straight day. Ground fire downed two Navy planes, pilots reported missing. Attacks hit oil dumps northwest and southwest of Haiphong, with explosions and smoke. Bomber raids along the Khmer border targeted fortifications and storage, Marines engaged North Vietnamese troops, with casualties reported including five dead and seven wounded.
Wisconsin's Legislature remains at loggerheads over Gov Knowles' highway safety package. The Senate rejected the Assembly plan to return July 11, sending lawmakers into an indeterminate pause. A six member compromise panel will convene next Friday to seek agreement on key auto inspection and driver education provisions as the fall session looms.
In Madison the last ban on colored oleo ended as Wisconsin began selling the yellow margarine at midnight after a legislative vote of 67 to 30 in the Assembly and 19 to 10 in the Senate. Gov Knowles had signed the measure last month allowing the sale.
The long July Fourth weekend pushed Wisconsin s highway fatality toll to 445, six more than the 1966 record. Early today Esther M Rada 21 of Chippewa Falls and Janet A Jennerman 20 of Ladysmith died when their car collided with another on Highway 53 in Eau Claire. Two others were injured. Friday night a head on collision on Highway 141 about 2 1/2 miles south of Stiles in Oconto County injured four and fatally injured Gertrude Nass 63 Mrs Mary Jane Malsch 25 and her four year old son Gary Lee Kenosha. Three others were injured. A crash near Dickeyville left Borghild Olesen 66 of Bakersfield Calif dead from injuries suffered earlier in the week.
Montauk New York AP reports 74 year old Capt William Willis sails alone in the small 1144o0t Little One across 3000 miles of Atlantic toward Plymouth England. He carries supplies for 120 days and relies on a hand crank radio SOS only. Willis previously crossed the Pacific on a raft in 1954 and says he will exercise and maintain a strict routine.
Walter O'Brien, crabbing near Newport, dropped his sunglasses into the water and retrieved them 45 minutes later, snagged by a crab gripping the frames with its claws.
Strong winds and rain struck Oshkosh at about 1 am causing limited damage. Fire officials reported no storm related calls, while Wisconsin Public Service noted brief power outages in scattered areas. Trees and branches fell mainly due to old or diseased limbs, with no major structural damage reported.
Gov Knowles issued a State of Emergency on Wisconsin roads from Friday through September 5 with an initial start date of July 4. He ordered the National Guard to assist during heavy weekend traffic all summer. He cited 336 highway deaths in the first five months, up from 331 a year earlier.
A tornado touched down early in Chilton Wisconsin causing two buildings to collapse and damaging a dozen more. An infant was cut by glass while the Daun and Stadtmueller families escaped unharmed. The storm knocked down trees and power lines, prompting overnight street clearance and regional outages across northwestern Wisconsin.
