Rebels from a United Fruit Co sugar plantation in Oriente province kidnap four more Americans in eastern Cuba. Two U.S. diplomats seek release for 41 other Americans and 3 Canadians seized since Thursday as dawn raids target sleeping workers at Guaro sugar mill.
Government jet fighters struck hillside positions west of Beirut at dawn as security forces and Druze irregulars clashed with rebels near the airport. Rebels clung to villages amid ongoing fighting, with no immediate word on hostages or casualties. The clashes marked a second day of confrontations in the Beiru t region during a larger defense operation.
Secretary of State John Foster Dulles plans an early August visit to Brazil despite threats of mass anti United States demonstrations. Officials expect a formal announcement and a departure around August 4 for two to three days in Brasilia.

The U S Senate approved a bill to admit Alaska as the 49th state by a 64 to 20 vote, with presidential approval and Alaskan ratification still required. If signed, Alaska gains voting representatives and senators, elects state officials, and can vote for president, while remaining portions stay under federal ownership.
The House approved a bill extending the school milk program for three years and sending it to President Eisenhower for signature. The measure authorizes federal contributions totaling 75 million dollars through June 2 to reimburse schools summer camps and other non profit child care and training institutions that supplement child diets with milk.
A 66-year-old man, who spent 52 years largely behind bars, is back at his home in Kyoto after police caught him stealing a bicycle. He had spent all but four months of the last 52 years in jail.
Rep. Oren Harris called a closed door strategy session for House Investigating subcommittees to review charges against Bernard Goldfine of Boston. Public hearings paused until Wednesday as Curtis sought a three member committee to rule on a House rule violation. Records suggest Goldfine and accuser John Fox were in Washington in 1955 for a conversation Fox cited. Denials came from Adams and Goldfine. Fox was dismissed amid uproar after three days of testimony. Choate and Adams denied ties to Adams influence at FTC. Hawaii statehood supporters urged immediate action in Congress. Thurston’s group planned renewed campaigning after Alaska’s vote. A Hawaii editorial drive and a call to editors nationwide aimed to boost support ahead of a possible upsurge.
The United States again demanded that Russia release nine American servicemen held by East Germany after their helicopter crossed the border June 7. Soviet officials insist negotiations proceed only through East Germany the GDR, with Moscow reaffirming U S responsibility under postwar four power terms.
A Belgian air force jet reconnaissance aircraft was forced down by four Soviet MiG fighters over East Germany and was subsequently returned to the West. The incident occurred May 29 near Lauenburg with Weather page 2 reference.
