North Korea's seizure of the Pueblo exposes gaps between American power and diplomacy. Washington faces a legal, nonmilitary approach to recover the ship and 83 crew as Pentagon plans for a bold rescue appear impractical, risking hostages.
The United States sends more aircraft carriers and destroyers to join the Enterprise task force in Korean waters. Reports say Soviet ships shadow the force while North Korea hammers the Pueblo case and urges punishment for the crew. Washington cautions that any trial would escalate the crisis. South Korea, Japan, and allied forces prepare along the front.
FBI detained seven men linked to the Minutemen anti Communist group amid plans to blow up Redmond police station and a power plant then raid four banks in Redmond Bellevue Des Moines and Seattle area. Duane Carlson led the plot with a $30 000 bail set. one man posted bail by day’s end.
Washington reports a Soviet intelligence trawler the Gidrolog appeared near a U S naval task force off South Korea in international waters. The Enterprise Truxtun and four destroyers stood by in the Sea of Japan amid the Pueblo crisis, with officials noting a long history of unescorted intelligence ships operating globally and no policy change expected.
Viet Cong lunar New Year truce began with mortar barrages against U S Marines at Khe Sanh and South Vietnamese positions near Saigon. Col. Lownds doubted observance as hospital near Pleiku was hit. Air Cavalry moved north to reinforce Marines amid signals of a major Communist offensive. Mortars wounded 20 Marines as the truce commenced with renewed fighting.
Washington reports say two Republican senators condemned the Pueblo mission off North Korea for lacking advance protection. A top House Republican echoed the critique and a Democratic senator urged ready protection for the electronics ship while noting the mission was peaceful and a warship escort might have been unwise. Mundt said somebody blundered in a delicate semi bellicent region and Sparkman called for arrangements to summon U.S. aircraft.
Washington AP The Navy placed a freeze on most discharge requests from naval reserve units during the Korean crisis. On Jan 24 with thousands called to active duty, the service halted new terminations while processing preexisting filings and ordered completion of those in progress.
A pre dawn blaze in Portage killed four children in a two story frame dwelling. Joseph Gray his wife and three other children escaped but firefighters could not find the four remaining youngsters amid heat and dense smoke. An eighth child was staying with neighbors at the time.
United Nations Security Council debates sending Secretary General Thant or another neutral to negotiate the release of the USS Pueblo and its 83 crew held by North Korea. The plan seeks an umbrella for cooperation, with debate over condemnation and the veto risk, as diplomats reference a 1954 China incident and past missions.
At Thule Greenland a B52 crashed with four nuclear bombs on board. Co pilot Captain Leonard Svitenko of West Springfield Massachusetts was killed attempting to secure the aircraft as a cabin fire forced bailout. The seven other crew members ejected and survived while search teams combed icy North Star Bay for bomb parts amid high winds.
